Setting the Mood: Pastel Me Again

By |March 25th, 2013|Setting the Mood|

pastel inpsiration boardPunxsutawney Phil may be getting sued, but technically speaking, spring is upon us.  And speaking of groundhogs, one trend for spring that is making a repeat appearance is pastel.  Everything from shoes to shades to even hair is taking on the hues of your favorite summer sunset or bag of Sweet Tarts… whichever you prefer (but really, why choose?).  So get your girly girl on by stepping into spring’s sweetest trend, but remember, just like downing that entire bag of Sweet Tarts, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing.  Except for sunsets.  There can never be enough sunsets.

Setting the Mood: Opposite Day

By |February 20th, 2013|Setting the Mood|

black and white spring trendsThe best way to get through the next two months of below freezing temperatures is to plan ahead.  Plan vacations, plan summer shares, plan spring wardrobes… One of Spring 2013’s trends was the minimalistic and graphic use of black and white shown by everyone from Marc Jacobs to Balmain to Michael Kors.  A long time fan of bold black and white, I am happy to report that this really is one of those trends that would be hard to get wrong… (though I’m sure someone is capable of screwing it up).  You can opt for an actual black and white print or simply pair black and white separates to achieve the look that is clean, crisp, and classic.  Throw em for a loop by accessorizing the look with a red lip or bright bag.

Setting the Mood: Make a Wish

By |January 17th, 2012|Setting the Mood|

Something about birthdays makes me giddy.  Maybe it’s having a very special day to myself (and anyone else who shares it with me), or maybe it’s just the anticipation of what surprises the day might bring.  Whatever it is, I like it.  As we get older though, the celebrations change little by little as do our priorities.  When I once wished for a pony, I now wish for pony hair pumps… well, I’d still take a pony to be perfectly  honest.  Cupcakes, balloons, candles, and presents.  What’s not to like about celebrating another year of life?

Setting the Mood: Don’t Lose Sight

By |December 28th, 2011|Setting the Mood|

All that glitters is not gold.

Something clever I was told.

The stars that shine the most bright

Are the first to lose their light.

Although the glimmer is appealing

Don’t lose sight of your inner feeling.

Before you’re left out in the cold

Remember all that glitters is not gold.

Setting the Mood: Hallucinate a Heatwave

By |August 2nd, 2011|Setting the Mood|

Mark Twain once said, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.”  Well, he certainly wasn’t kidding.  One would think living in California is all palm trees and sunshine… well, not so much.

After returning from the east coast this week, I realized how much I miss a real summer.  You know, the almost unbearable heat that lingers long past sunset and the humidity that can curl even the most perfectly coifed ‘do.  While it rarely dips below forty in California, the summers are never as warm as those of the east coast.  It never, ever feels like summer.  “They” tell me it gets warm starting in September, but I don’t buy it.

These bright brights are just going to have to get me through the mild California summer.  Perhaps wearing something bright will radiate its own heat.
