Friday Frocks: Fade to Black

By |January 6th, 2012|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

Well, January is in full swing and after the holidays and festivities have wound down, it may just feel like one big ‘ol hangover.  You’ve sequined and accessorized and now you probably just want to lay low.  Bling feels so blah and glitter makes you want to gag.  That’s where the good ol’ LBD comes into play.  Consider it your lime sorbet between appetizer and entree.  The LBD is a great palate cleanser to hold you over between holiday and spring.  Its uses are endless and it doesn’t have to be boring.  Cutouts, texture, and unexpected details are what make an LBD a totally stylish staple.  Dress it up, dress it down.  Take it from day to night.  You really never can go wrong when you’re back in black.

By |December 29th, 2011|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

If you’re anything like me, you’ve been salivating over the opportunity to channel your inner chandelier this New Year’s Eve.  If you’re not like me, well, then we covered you last week with the “anti-sparkle dress.”   New Year’s Eve is your time to shine.  Both literally and figuratively.  I think there are two completely appropriate times (and a free hall passes) to wear as much glimmery, shimmery, I’m a disco ball garb as you damn well please.  One is your birthday and the other is obviously New Year’s Eve.  In honor of one of the most overhyped holidays, here are twelve beautiful blinged out dresses to strut your stuff in that won’t leave you looking like a Las Vegas showgirl.

Friday Frocks: The Anti-Sparkle Dress

By |December 23rd, 2011|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

It was recently brought to my attention that not every woman is interested in decking herself out from head to toe in sequins, glitter, and sparkles.  I know.  I can hardly believe it myself.  Why would you not want to risk damaging the eyes of those around you with the blinding glimmer of your festive frock?  Mind boggling really.  Well, anyway, if you are one of the lovely ladies who is just not feeling all that glitters, it would prove to be somewhat difficult to navigate the racks and racks of embellished, beaded, and rhinestoned attire.  Lucky for you, I’ve found some absolutely cocktail party appropriate frocks with nary a sequin in sight.

1. Motel High Contrast Dress, $79.99, 2. Alice + Olivia Tamira Leather Bustier Dress, $596, 3. Parker Double Flared Sleeve Dress, $209, 4. Helmut Lang Long Drape Dress, $275, 5. Tibi Long Sleeve Dress with Cutout Back, $396, 6. Diane von Furstenberg Enny Dress, $375, 7. French Connection Shelby Stripe Pleat Dress, $198, 8. Porter Grey Sleeveless Dress, $385, 9. Tibi Silk and Lace Dress, $515, 10. Issa Short Kimono Dress, $595

And wouldn’t you know?  These dresses are the perfect solid palates to adorn with some sparkly accessories.

Friday Frocks: Queen of Bling

By |December 9th, 2011|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

What’s that you say?  You love looking like a human disco ball?  Well, aren’t you in luck.  Today’s Friday Frocks is for all my fellow blingophiles (yeah, I just made that up. So what?).  If just simple sparkly accessories won’t cut it, yet you aren’t quite comfortable with prancing down the runway in a $2.5M bra like Miranda Kerr, then I’ve got several other sequin covered creations that may very well be right up your alley.

1. French Connection Samantha Sequin Dress, $298, 2.Balmain Silk Stripe Sequin Dress, $4,765, 3. Vintage 90’s High Slit Sequin Dress, $219, 4. Antik Batik Magenta Sequin Dress, $427, 5. Kensie Sequin Dress, $88, 6. Lipsy Shift Dress, $136.35, 7. Rachel Zoe One Sleeve Sequin Dress, $295, 8. Matthew Williamson Liquid Sequin Dress, $3,062, 9. French Connection Lucinda Sequin Dress, $248, 10. TFNC Sequin Dress, $99.99

Remember not to accessorize your blingy dress with more blingy accessories.  This is and “either/or” situation.  I’ll let you and Marilyn fight it out for the title of “Queen of Bling.”

Friday Frocks: Lady in Red

By |December 2nd, 2011|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

Now that it is officially December, let the holiday melee begin.  Not only do you have to find everyone on your holiday shopping list the perfect gift, you’re going to have to show up to give it to them.  And well, that’s probably going to require your attendance at many a fab holiday soiree.  So, why not start with one of the most obvious choices?  The Little Red Dress.  Now, let’s get one thing straight.  Every couple of seasons or so, someone tries to dub another color the “New Little Black Dress.”  Get real.  There is no such thing as the “New Little Black Dress.”  It’ll never happen.  The Little Black Dress is like the Queen of England- not going anywhere. HOWEVER, during this magical month, it is fun to swap out basic black for a color more festive… like Santa’s famous red suit.  (He wears black the rest of the year, FYI).  Also, you dont have to go for the oh so obvious fire engine red.  Try a deeper shade or perhaps even a pattern.

1. Emerson Thorpe Solid Tassels Dress, $286, 2. BB Dakota Kassia Dress, $105, 3. Tibi Floral Print Silk Gazaar Dress, $570, 4. Madison Marcus Triumph Bustier Dress, $315, 5. Lanvin Silk Gazar Dress, $3,990, 6. Vena Cava Youth Dress, $485, 7. Free People Printed Bodycon Dress, $68, 8. French Connection Drape Delight Asymmetric Dress, $259.99, 9. Forever 21 Scoop Back Lace Tank Dress, $24.80, 10. Jill Stuart Silk Chiffon Dress, $298
