Setting the Mood: Sleep Tight

By |November 13th, 2012|Setting the Mood|

fashion pajamasThis time of year, when the weather goes from pleasantly crisp to shockingly cold, it’s quite easy to want to just throw in the towel, err… cashmere blanket, and just stop caring about what you wear.  It’s even quite likely that you’ve completely given up on putting yourself together and leaving the house at all.  I’ve found that I now prefer a pleasant night in rather than a raucous night out.  Not to mention, my razor blade refills have become fewer and fewer.  Pretty soon Smitty is going to think I’m fair game.  That said, there really is no reason to be a complete and utter hot mess.  There’s gotta be a happy medium between comfy sweats and club slut… right?

As I sat having dinner with friends at Barbuto on Saturday night (that glass garage door makes for fantastic people watching), in addition to the gentleman in the grey knit cap who walked by over ten times and was clearly casing the joint (or my friends), we were astonished at the parade of Paul Frank printed flannel pajama pants.  Come.  On.  Hello Kitty printed pants aren’t okay in Wal-Mart and they sure as heck aren’t welcome on the streets of the West Village.  When designers sent pajama inspired looks down the runways, I doubt Spongebob was what they had in mind.  I live in a neighborhood that is so trendy, I have to up my game when merely running to the corner deli.  Sure, I’m just on a TP run, but the rest of you are gearing up for stylish dinner dates and tequila shots at Tortilla Flats.  So, whether you’re staying in or heading out, pull yourselves together, girls.

Friday Frocks: Frock Optional

By |June 8th, 2012|Friday Frocks|

baby rompersThis shouldn’t be news to you, but I love rompers.  If there’s a romper on the rack, most likely it’s going to end up in my closet.  Sure they’re really annoying when you have to use the ladies’ room and not the best choice when going in for a Brazilian, but they are one step dressing (Why do you think babies like them so much?).  Which leads me to my point… Frocks have been getting all the attention.  Rompers are all like, “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia.”  Well, fact is, rompers are my Marcia.  And this week, they will be yours as well.

Why Did You Wear That: No Grey Area

By |February 14th, 2012|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

black and white wallFor those who don’t know me, it may seem strange that my favorite colors are black and white (since black and white aren’t technically considered “colors”).  Much like I try to live my life, I also like my palette to be very black and white.  I do love color very much, but there is something so crisp, so clean, and so refreshing about bold black and white patterns.  Whether it be stripes, dots, florals, geometric shapes, or just something totally abstract, I can’t get enough of these opposite shades.  From my clothing, to our home decor, black and white rule my world.  The best part of using black and white as your base?  The ability to punch it up with just about any color as an accent.

black and white wall los angelesI don’t want to tell Smitty, but he falls under this color scheme and it’s quite possible why I love him even more.  His soft white fluffy fur set off by those big black eyes and little black dot of a nose make him absolutely perfect. He is my best accessory afterall.  Want to incorporate some black and white into your life?  Here are several options of how to do just that:

Why Did You Wear That: Ray of Light

By |January 24th, 2012|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

Though winter here hasn’t been much more than grey and rainy, I was able to catch a little bit of sun a couple of weekends ago.

I know coming hot off the heels of my Stylelist Q + A, this may seem like a “risky” outfit choice.  Here’s the thing: I don’t hate leggings as a whole.  I hate when girls wear leggings like they’re Levi’s.  I’ve got a whole stack of leggings, but you better believe that unless I’m in the midst of a pilates class, my “assets” are covered when wearing them.

I love the sheer peach mixed with grey knits and grounded with a luggage brown boot.  It’s a nice alternative to the standard black and brings a little bit of light (ness) to your most grey winter days.

Rule of thumb when deciding whether or not a shirt is long enough to be worn with leggings:  Put your hands down to your sides.  If the shirt reaches your fingertips, it should be okay.  It’s kind of like the skirt/shorts rule in highschool.  Use your head (and your eyes), your front pieces and bum should not be showing.  Leggings, afterall, are not pants.

1. Equipment Major Blouse, $208, 2. Top Shop Ribbed Marl Leggings, $36, 3. Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eyeliner (Peacock), $20, 4. Bare Escentuals Pretty Amazing Lip Color (Confidence), $16, 5. Kain Modal Silk Blend Tank, $85, 6. Alex & Ani 12 Assorted  Expandable Bangles, $138, 7. Steve Madden Intyce Cognac Boots, $149.95

Look for Less: There’s A Blouse In The House

By |August 25th, 2011|Look for Less, Why Did You Wear That?|

A piece that all women would be wise to incorporate into their wardrobe is a feminine button down blouse. I tend to be a little “bottom” heavy – aka lots of pants and bottoms and not a top to go with ’em. A beautiful blouse can be very versatile depending on how you style it. From a casual outing (Rachel Bilson) to a very important meeting (Duchess Kate) a blouse can be worn for almost any and all occasions. Once you come to terms with the fact that titty tops are no longer appropriate, you too will be embracing the ladylike blouse.
