Friday Frocks: The Highs and Lows

Should you wear a long dress? Or something short and sassy? Can’t make up your mind? You don’t have to! Recently I’ve seen an influx of frocks that allow you to wear both. Short in the front and long in the back. Is this the mullet of dresses? Maybe. Hm… the mullet suddenly makes so much more sense to me now. Weird. These schizophrenic hemmed frocks appear to be the perfect answer for an outdoor or afternoon wedding or a semi-formal party. When you’re wearing both how can you really go wrong?

Girl Crush: Free to Be Dree

Speaking of luscious literary ladies, this beyond gorgeous gal has deeply rooted family history in American Literature. Granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway, Dree Hemingway has made a name for herself and it may have to more to do with her looks than books. I have a mild to moderate interest in Ernest Hemingway, so when one of my best friends indulged me in visiting the Hemingway Home in Key West back in November, we were intrigued to see family photos including those of Margaux and Mariel Hemingway, Dree’s mom. Upon further Wikipediaing (is that a verb yet?), we discovered Dree and her sister, the equally lovely, Langley Fox. It’s hard to believe so many beautiful and interesting people share the same DNA.

But back to my girl crush du jour, Dree. She’s chic. She’s understated. She’s the girl we all wish we were. The epitome of “Oh, this ol’ thing? I thought I knew a thing or two about layering, but Dree could even school the Olsens! It seems I’m not alone in my admiration of this lanky blonde’s style. You may recognize her from Madewell’s holiday (choose your own adventure) campaign and Sandro tapped her to design a capsule collection for the brand. With her classica all-American looks and fun free spirit, I get the feeling this is just the begininning for Dree… and there’s plenty more to see.

Friday Frocks: Life’s a Beach

Can you pass me the SPF, please? Oh… right. It’s snowing here. That means a couple of things. 1. It’s time for me to go home (to California). 2. It’s also time to transport myself (mentally) to a place with warm breezes, cool cocktails, and soft white sand. How does one do that you ask? Friday Frocks: Fade to Black

Well, January is in full swing and after the holidays and festivities have wound down, it may just feel like one big ‘ol hangover. You’ve sequined and accessorized and now you probably just want to lay low. Bling feels so blah and glitter makes you want to gag. That’s where the good ol’ LBD comes into play. Consider it your lime sorbet between appetizer and entree. The LBD is a great palate cleanser to hold you over between holiday and spring. Its uses are endless and it doesn’t have to be boring. Cutouts, texture, and unexpected details are what make an LBD a totally stylish staple. Dress it up, dress it down. Take it from day to night. You really never can go wrong when you’re back in black.

Why Did You Eat That: This Little Piggy

While traipsing around San Francisco, running errands and popping into open houses (what? it’s okay to look), we managed to work up a little appetite. So, we stopped in for brunch at The Tipsy Pig to grab a quick bite. I have to say the name drew me in, but the menu is what got me to agree to stay.

To me, this place was like a grown up sports bar. There were plenty of other restaurants and bars nearby that were filled with loud SF fans… and I really can’t be bothered with that. The Tipsy Pig still had all the games on their several scattered TV’s, but I didn’t have to worry about a drunk jersey clad fool falling into my breakfast.

Speaking of booze, I don’t drink beer, but I could be persuaded with the way they named their sizes: Piglet (10oz), Pint (15oz), and Tipsy Pig (20oz). How cute is that? Oh, and apparently, they have a pretty extensive selection of beers for those of you who are interested. Instead I opted for a Mary Pig (bloody Mary) and my dining compadre tested out the root beer float (an adult beverage version). Both were delicious.

For our midday snack, we ordered the Pig’s Almost Famous Smoked Bacon Mac and Cheese (it was good… but I’ve had better) and the Pulled Pork Sloppy Joe to share. I was pleasantly surprised with the pulled pork and for a great recipe to try at home, click here.

So what would be a great outfit for a day of strolling and shopping? An outfit that won’t get you thrown out of an open house, but will still be comfortable when you curl up in a booth with a bloody Mary? I love colored skinny corduroys and a snuggly sweater. Throw a big fringe bag over your shoulder and wedge booties (still the height without the pain) and you’re good to go.
