Girl Crush: Go-Go-Gomez

By |May 15th, 2013|Celebrity Style|

selena gomez fashionOnce a wizard of Waverly Place, Selena Gomez has ditched her Disney darling act as most recently showcased in the raunchy film, Spring Breakers.  Sure she caught a temporary case of Bieber fever, but it seems Ms. Gomez is growing up and moving on.  It’s alright, girl.  We’ve all made mistakes.  If we looked back at at my boyfriend at twenty, I’d be a little red faced too.  Along with her dating and career choices, her style is also evolving and with her glossy locks, long legs, and girl next door (in your dreams) looks, she’s setting herself up to be a real red carpet darling.  Not one to shy away from a bikini or midriff baring top (clearly, she spent two hours on the big screen in not much else), Gomez has captured the perfect mix between young woman and youthful age appropriateness- unlike some of her tween trainwreck graduates.  To get Gomez’s enviable style, grab some key pieces below and start doing some sit ups, like right now.

1. Vince Leather Hi Lo Tee, 2. Jimmy Choo Anouk Patent Leather Shoes, 3. bumble and bumble Shine On Finishing Spray, 4. Smith’s Rosebud Salve, 5. Olay Complete Defense Daily UV Moisturizer SPF 30, 6. Why Did You Wear That: Suits, No Ties.

By |April 4th, 2013|Why Did You Wear That?|

You know what I love almost as much/more/I can’t decide than lingerie?  Swimsuits.  Know why?  ‘Cause it’s like underwear that you can wear in public.  Who doesn’t like beating the heat poolside wearing a barely there fashion statement?  And why else have you been going to the gym?  Oh right, for cardiovascular health, of course. Whatever, you totally do it to counterbalance those Girl Scout cookies.  You’re not fooling anyone.   Not that it matters because swimsuit season is upon us and you’re just going to have to come to terms with that.

This season’s swimwear is strongly reflective of spring trends. Colorblocking, graphic black and white, midriff tops, fringe, and cutouts are all staples for the catwalk as well as the boardwalk.  And while I still stand firm that less is more when it comes to bikini bottom coverage, there are cuts and shapes for all body types.

Look for Less: Dolce, Dolce, Dolce

By |January 16th, 2013|Look for Less, Why Did You Wear That?|

Remember the bag in last week’s outfit post?  Well, months and months (ie., about a year) ago, I spotted this adorable Dolce & Gabbana bag on net-a-porter.  What a delight!  Then I saw the price tag.  Hardly delightful coming in at a cool three grand.  So, in the infamous words of my mother I said, “I can make that.”  And that I did.  It took me a while to go about gathering up all of my supplies, but last week, I finally complete my mission and I am not one to boast, but I think it turned out pretty amazing… dare I say even better?  I love mine more than Dolce’s (sorry, Stefano) because it’s personalized with my own charms and oh yeah, it didn’t cost $3,000.

What you need:

Black Purse:

I recommend a bag that is not particularly thick so as to be able to stitch through it with limited cursing.

Thread, needle, scissors, needle threader

Charms and pins

What you do:

Thread the needle.

Attach charms one by one.

Continue attaching charms in pins until you end up with…

This!

And you may end up with a few pricks (no more than your average Friday night out), but the pay off is well worth the work. La dolce vita!

Why Did You Wear That: Golden Girls

By |January 14th, 2013|Celebrity Style, Red Carpet Recap, Why Did You Wear That?|

golden globes red carpetI stayed up putting this together until 4am last night… which led me to sleep in this morning, throwing off my entire schedule… and that’s why you’ve had to wait so long to hear what I’m sure you’ve been fidgeting in your seat hoping all day long to hear: my opinion.

And so below you’ll find my picks for the best, the worst, and the biggest trends that were seen on the red carpet from last night’s Golden Globes.  It’s funny how different some of these dresses look in photographs as opposed to watching them live on TV.  The colors look different, there’s no movement, and a little bit of the magic is sucked out of them.  While gathering these snaps, I started to question my original picks, but then decided to go with the dresses that made me grin from the get go.

Last night’s show was all about the women of Hollywood and they certainly dressed the part.  This is the first time in a long time where I actually had a hard time whittling down my choices and debating on how much to include in my recap.  But enough about me, let’s get down to business.

The Best:

The Worst:

worst dressed golden globesSienna Miller in Erderm, Lucy Liu in Carolina Herrera, Halle Berry in Atelier Versace

And with every award show, there tends to be a trend or two that rules the red carpet.  This year, without a doubt, it was the presence of black.  At one point, I was left scratching my head wondering if this show was being held in Los Angeles or New York.  Contrary to the belief that black is boring, the ladies found ways to wear this staple that were the least bit dull.

Sprinkled in with basic black were pops of tangerine, bits of blush, and lots of sparkle.  Here are some trends that stood out and can probably expect to see more of during upcoming award shows.

Total Black Out:

Olivia Munn in Giorgio Armani, Sarah Paulson in Reem Acra, Katharine McPhee in Theyskens’ Theory

On the Flip Side:

Why Did You Wear That: Stopping Short

By |April 3rd, 2012|Why Did You Wear That?|

celebrities crop topsThis past weekend, three of Tinsletown’s loveliest ladies were all seen sporting a little bit of bare midriff while walking the red (err… orange?) carpet.  This bit of belly is different from the crop tops of a couple summers past.  It’s not so much belly button as it is rib cage.  It’s the teeniest little peek-a-boo of skin that is both sexy and playful.  It’s less Christina Aguilera Genie in a Bottle and a bit more Gidget Goes Hawaiian.  And for anyone who was ever a bit self conscious about showing some torso, don’t worry.  This is much more wearable and will keep that fearsome FUPA under wraps.

cropped bustier tops1. Missoni Elsa Cropped Crochet Knit Top, $530, 2. FP New Romantics Woven Bustier, $78, 3. Material Girl Bustier, $29, 4. Dolce & Gabbana Chili Pepper Print Cotton Bustier, $1000, 5. MinkPink Support Group Bustier, $35, 6. Mara Hoffman Embroidered Bustier Top, $207, 7. Topshop Petite Cutout Swan Bralet, $52, 8. Smith Denim Bustier, $80, 9. Free People Kiki Top, $78, 10. SO Dot Convertible Mini Bustier, $14.99

While some are referring to these as “bralettes” that’s not quite the right term.  (Did I not already school you in bralettes?).  I would consider these to be cropped bustier tops.  You’ll have much more luck when searching using those terms.  The trick to this look is pairing your teeny top with a high waisted skirt or slacks.  That way your outfit will read “le petite coquette” rather than “big dirty whore.”
