Why Don’t You Take a Vacation?

By |June 2nd, 2011|Beauty Buzz|

I know that last weekend was Memorial Day, but come on.  The weather hasn’t gotten nearly nice enough here in the Bay to even sorta kinda feel like summer. Hell, I had on a sweater yesterday!  As I longingly look at snapshots on Facebook of friends by the beach and pan through emails from Gilt JetSetter, I mentally transport myself to a chaise lounge chair in Honolulu (sipping a mai tai, of course).  I can hear the waves, feel the sun, and even smell the suntan lotion on my sunkissed skin- can you feel it?  Then I hear that oh so familiar email “ding” and am brought right back to reality.  Oh, that’s right.  I’m in an office.  wearing glasses and not the sun protective type.

Well, until I get a little time to hop a flight to Hawaii, I’ve come up with a temporary mood boosting, mind tricking fix.  I’m going to smell like vacation.  That’s right.  Don’t underestimate the power of scent.  Slathering on a few of these products in the morning can transport you from even the dreariest climate to your dream destination.  Hey… it’s cheaper than a vacation.

1. St. Ives Naturally Indulgent Advanced Body Moisturizer, $5.49 2. Organix Nourishing Coconut Milk Shampoo, $6.99, 3. Escada Taj Sunset Eau de Toilette, $55, 4. Why Don’t You Come in for a Tune Up?

By |April 7th, 2011|Beauty Buzz|

Just like the finest automobiles, women need tune ups from time to time.  Our bodies are complex machinery and need to be treated as such.  Taking care of yourself should be for no other reasons than selfish ones.  Do not do it for a man or for anyone else.  Do it for you.

When cars aren’t serviced they don’t run as well.  They get all rusty and sputtery and they just aren’t as fun to drive.  When I wasn’t taking care of myself, I just did not feel good, let alone sexy.  Chances of me feeling frisky and wanting to skip around the apartment in my birthday suit was slim to none.  This made my fiance sad.  Very, very sad.

I finally pulled it together and got myself back on the road (I used my blinker, of course).  So what exactly should we be doing to make sure we’re in tip top running condition?

Ripped Off: Every four weeks or so I head in for self inflicted torture of the nether regions.  The first time is by far the worst and the longer you wait between waxes, the stronger the hair gets because the root has a chance to really grip in there.  However, the more regular you are with your mangrove maintenance, the thinner the hair gets and the less painful the experience is.  Even when I was not tied down with a mate, I still took care of my special place because I just felt better about myself.  Besides, we don’t need any “spill over” at the pool.

Save Face: I never realized the importance of a facial until 1) I reached 25 and 2) lived in a house with mass amounts of natural sunlight.  As we get older, our cells turn over slower.  This can make your skin look dull, increase the amount of blackheads present, and lead to more breakouts.  By going to a facial professional every 6-8 weeks you’re having an expert rid your skin of all the gunk so you can be just as glowing and gorgeous as you were as a baby.  Between facials, you can try out one of my favorite products from Murad:

Splitting Hairs: Recently, a gal pal told me that her hair was finally growing.  For years she’d been under the impression that her hair would never grow past a certain length.  Her former hairstylist had been chopping her locks off every time she came in and letting her think that was as far as it would grow.  While getting a trim about every eight weeks is needed, make sure that your stylist is only removing the straggly ends rather than getting all scissor happy on your ‘do.

Check Under the Hood: Every single year you should be going to visit the lady doctor to get your little princess checked out.  You should start doing this the minute you become sexually active or when you hit 18 (whichever comes first- hopefully 18).  I am horrified to hear girls say that they don’t go either because they are “scared” or just lazy.  There is absolutely nothing to be scared about except for what could happen if you don’t go.  With things like HPV, ovarian cancer, and endometriosis, you’ve got to be careful.  There is some serious pipework down there and you want to take good care of it.

Find a Spot: While we are being serious, let’s move on to another health concern.  Skin cancer.  Even if you think you aren’t susceptible to melanoma, it’s probably a good idea to have a dermatologist check out your skin once a year as well as any time you notice a bizarre mole of freckle.  The best way to avoid serious health problems is prevention.  Check out this slideshow of skin conditions to look out for.  It’s a little gross… but so is skin cancer. Well you can discover this info here about healing skin cancer.

Twinkle Toes: While this may seem trivial and on the verge of diva-like, hear me out.  One of the least expensive ways to put some pep in your step is by pampering those tired toes.  Adding a bit of color can brighten you day as well.  If you can’t spring for a professional pedi every two weeks, try giving yourself an at home version.  You can also keep your tootsies soft by  using this awesome moisturizing duo from bliss:

By taking better care of yourself, you’ll feel like a whole new woman and you may even keep the “new car” smell.

Now, hit the road.

Beauty Buzz: Shield Your Skin

By |February 3rd, 2011|Beauty Buzz|

I’ve gone on at lengths about how important it is to take good care of your skin at an early age.  It’s called prevention.  I only wish I had not spent so much time in tanning beds in college because even though I’m still young, I’ve already started to notice the effects that excessive UV exposure has had on my precious dermis. Thanks God sun damage can be effectively treated at Touch Up Laser (you can check here for details).

Every single day, you should be applying SPF along with your regular skincare regimen.  Even when it’s winter, even when it’s hazy, even when you don’t feel like it.  Sometimes it can be hard to find a formula that isn’t greasy or smelly or doesn’t make your skin break out.  Enter Remede Translucent UV Coat:

Remede Translucent UV Coat SPF 30, $40

This stuff is incredibly light weight (and oil free!) while covering any imperfections and leaving your skin looking literally flawless.  You can’t even tell that you have anything on your face, but it will make you look like you’ve never had a pimple or exposed your skin to the harsh elements.  It is probably the best stuff I’ve ever owned.  Anyone who knows me, knows that I despise foundation and powder.  I’d rather walk around with a huge blinking blemish showing than cake up my face with tons of concealer.  So, not only is your skin now sheer perfection, you are also guarding it from those pesky UV rays and preventing wrinkles.  Double win. You may think $40 a pop is steep… but it’s a heck of a lot cheaper than a facelift.

Why Did You Eat That: Pure Bliss

By |January 24th, 2011|Los Angeles, Why Did You Eat That?|

Yes, birthdays should last longer than just a day. I mean we’ve spent the last 364 building up to just one day?  Why not go ahead and spread one’s birthday out over a few days… a week perhaps?  Well, thanks to some super spoiling, that’s exactly what I did.  After spending the day getting royally pampered at bliss, I was whisked off to an “overnight adventure”- location TBA.

It was a beautiful night and we drove with the windows down until we reached Malibu where we turned into the Malibu Beach Inn.  Sheer bliss ensued (for the second time that day).

After checking in and settling in our cozy but well appointed room, we cranked up the fireplace and spent some time out on the balcony which overlooks the ocean.  I couldn’t believe that it was the middle of January, yet here I was at the beach.  I mean, I know I haven’t been 100% sold on Los Angeles just yet, but this weather certainly does make a strong argument.

Dinner was just downstairs at the hotel’s restaurant, Carbon Beach Club.  There is both indoor and outdoor seating, though I can’t really imagine who would want to sit inside when you could be dining almost literally on top of the ocean.  Call me crazy. Anyway, while the heaters and fire pit kept us warm, we began to order the spicy tuna tartar and caprese salad.  Both were very fresh and delicious. The spicy tuna tartar is a really different and original take on your run of the mill tartar.  For dinner we had the three cheese ravioli (um, you had me at ravioli) and the NY steak.  Again, both were insanely delicious and I had to stop myself from shoveling every last morsel of the ravioli into my mouth.  Clearly, I needed to leave room for dessert: cheesecake with fig and a lemon tart.  We left incredibly stuffed and happy. So stuffed that I conveniently slipped into a food coma while listening to the crashing waves.

I also awoke to the sound of crashing waves.  And then it was time for brunch.  Back downstairs we went.  Brunch was also a delight.  Huevos rancheros and prosciutto sandwiches are the best way to start your Sunday.  Oh- a delicious bloody Mary never hurt anyone either.  I really would have stayed there forever, but alas… it was time to depart and return to reality.  Goodbye Malibu Beach Inn… goodbye birthday week.

I will leave my bags packed until next time:

(L to R): Fluxus Nomad Scarf, $48, Bear Creek Weekender, $498, Madewell Mae Open Drape Jacket, $88, C & C Triblend Slim Jogger Pant, $26, Ray-Ban Metal Aviator, $129

Beauty Buzz: Tough as Nails

By |December 9th, 2010|Beauty Buzz|

I’ve mentioned once or twice that I have a heck of a time keeping any form of polish on my fingers. I have now been told that I may have “oily nailbeds.” Thanks, life. Dry skin and oily nailbeds. Anyway, I’ve tried Minx. I’ve tried OPI axxium.  I’ve spent weeks sans polish. So, when I went online to schedule my Brazilian last week, I was elated to see that bliss was now offering CND Shellac manicures! The sky then opened up and angels came down and serenaded me.

The problem with some of the gel manicures is that they are just as damaging as getting… gasp… acrylic nails. They may stay on and look shiny, but when it comes time to remove, there’s a lot of scraping, filing, and peeling done that leaves your nails week and paper thin.  When picking a gel manicure make sure that you ask if the gel will SOAK OFF. Otherwise, you may as well start picking out air brush art to go on your acrylics.

After experiencing the joy that is a Brazilian, I headed over to pamper my poor neglected little fingers. I mean, there is nothing worse than chipped nails when sporting your pretty diamond engagement bling. The lovely and talented Brandy fixed my fingers up in no time. She assured me that these puppies would last at least two weeks with no chips. The best part (other than the great convo and delicious mimosa) was the zero drying time. I still babied my fingers as if they might smudge, but they didn’t. It’s been about a week already and there is not a chip in sight (knock on wood).
