Beauty Buzz: You’re Doing It Wrong

putting on makeupIt’s very, very easy to get stuck in your very own beauty rut.  We’ve learned to do things a certain way and tend to stick to what’s worked for us.  However, you might have grown a bit too accustomed to your regular regimen.  Here are five ways to shake things up and get more out of your beauty routine:

  1. Get dirty.  Here’s a secret:  I only wash my hair twice a week.  Gross?  Meh.  Let’s consider it water conservation.  I have about two feet of hair and it’s a bit on the dry side.  Not to mention, blowing out my naturally wavy locks, puts a lot of stress on my tresses.  Dry shampoo and perfecting the art of a top knot, allow for extra time between washes.  Give your hair a break and let your body’s own natural oil seep in and condition your hair.
  2. Eyes first.  We’ve been taught to paint on our pretty faces by starting with foundation and finishing with our eyes.  Well, here’s the thing: when you finally do reach the grand finale smokey eye, you’re pretty likely to ruin the perfect palette you created in the first place with flecks of shadow and liner smudging your face.  Why not try starting your eyes and then completing the look by smoothing off any mess with your foundation, bronzer, and blush?
  3. Brush it off.  Before even stepping foot into the shower, you should use a dry brush to exfoliate your skin.  This will not only deflake any and all tired summer skin, but it also increases circulation which aids in the fight against cellulite.  Two birds, one brush. (Try this one from Elemis).
  4. Don’t brush it out.  So, pretty much the only time I ever brush my  hair is right before I wash it (which I’ve mentioned only happens twice a week).  I brush to get all the tangles out pre-sudsing and then use a comb to release any new snags post conditioning.  Marcia Brady was wrong:  you absolutely can overdo it with the brushing.
  5. Crank it up.  When flat ironing your hair, it’s actually better to turn the heat all the way up and make one pass down your tresses than to use moderate heat and go over and over and over… your hair.

Beauty Buzz: BB Queen

Remember last week when I schooled you on the beauty basic that is primer? And the best primers for mature skin.  Well, while doing my due diligence and rounding up the best primers on the market, I kept stumbling across this product called “BB cream.”  I had seen a couple of commercials also touting the unfamiliar name, but really thought nothing of it until, I noticed that Sephora had an entire product section devoted to this elusive beauty balm.

Being a total beauty junkie, I was utterly intrigued and hightailed it over to get myself some Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream.  BB Cream is supposed to be the secret to totally flawless skin when worn under your foundation.  The original BB creams (made popular in Asia) contain skin lighteners… not something I particularly need, seeing as I’m resembling Casper these days (can you say vitamin D deficiency?).  They have been mostly removed from the Western versions, but they have not skimped on the other benefits.  Most BB creams contain sunscreen, moisturizers, and anti-aging ingredients (much like primers).  The main difference I noticed with Smashbox’s version, at least, was the amazing coverage.  To be honest, I don’t actually wear foundation.  Usually just something tinted and a bit of powder.  This particular potion is the answer to all my complexion prayers.  It’s enough coverage to hide any unsightly blemishes (not that I ever have those), but not so heavy that I feel like I’m wearing an opera mask.  It stayed put all day and I got several compliments on what lovely skin I had all day.

There may be a bit of redundancy with primers and BB cream in my book.  I would, however, be more likely to trade my primer in for Smashbox’s Camera Ready, unless, of course, you have a primer that is made with water from the fountain of youth… and diamonds.  You don’t, do you?

Beauty Buzz: Prime Time

smeared makeupA crucial step you may be missing (as was I for the majority of my makeup wearing life) is something that happens before the rouge, before the mascara, and even before your foundation.  This very imperative, but often neglected step is the application of a little something called primer.  Primer should be applied the moment you are done moisturizing so as to “lock” in your moisturizer and create the smoothest “canvas” possible.  I know, I know.  It’s starting to get steamy outside, so the last thing you feel like doing is adding another layer to your fabulous face.  You’ve worked awfully hard getting that face painted to perfection, so applying a primer to prevent your face from melting off seems like a worthy cause, no?  And here’s the best part: many primers have added benefits like built in SPF or anti-aging ingredients.

Beauty Buzz: Best Kept Secret

kerastase cristallisteBack in March, I was fortunate enough to test out the new line from Kerastase called Cristalliste.  It’s been touted as the “best kept secret for long hair” and I’ve gotta say… they weren’t kidding.  That’s why I couldn’t possibly keep Cristalliste a secret for long.  While, I was open to sharing my latest haircare find, I do have some other secrets.  And don’t we all?

Beauty Buzz: Blushing Beauty

peach cheeks spring 2012The runways were taken over with peachy perfect complexions for Spring 2012.  Everyone from Michael Kors to Preen sent their lovely ladies down the catwalk with cheeks juicier than Georgia peaches.  That means that peachy cheeks are certain to be on trend this spring.  Does that mean I have to ditch my beloved Benetint?  (Um, never).  But in the off chance that I wanted to trade in my typical flushed cheeks for something a bit softer, I went out and purchased Tarte’s Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blush in Blissful.

The color is true to the packaging and is also totally buildable,  So, does it last twelve hours?  Meh… not so much.  You  may need a 3 o’clock touch up (kinda like that 3 o’clock coffee break) to revive the color, but I would absolutely recommend this nutrient rich, perfect shade of peach to capitalize on one of this spring’s prettiest makeup trends.
