Look for Less: Teen Queens

By |August 7th, 2011|Look for Less, Why Did You Wear That?|

Sunday night Hollywood’s hottest headed to the 2011 Teen Choice Awards in Los Angeles.  While this isn’t quite the Met Costume Gala and may be frowned upon by the fashion elite, I always like seeing the fresh young faces in more casual, carefree attire.  This year, the stunning starlets certainly did not disappoint.  Below are a few of my favorite looks.  I’ve recreated each to show you that looking red carpet ready is as easy as 1, 2, 3.

Friday Frocks: Block Party

By |April 15th, 2011|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

A couple of months ago, I pointed out the oh so colorful, oh so fun colorblocking trend that we had seen all over the runways and on our favorite stars.  I even showed you how to recreate the look.  But alas, it can be tricky not to mention treacherous trying to pull this look off for the untrained fashionista.

And why wouldn’t we have a little history lesson on this fine Friday?

While this trend feels fresh for spring, it’s not actually new.  Much like all fashion, it’s been recycled and given a new spin.  The original colorblocked dress above is from Yves Saint Laurent circa 1965.  Piet Mondrian’s Composition II in Red, Blue, and Yellow (1930)  was used for the inspiration and this simple shift became iconic.

Below are some modern takes on the colorblock trend for you to try out yourself:

1. Forever 21 Colorblock Bodycon Dress, $15.80, 2. Diane von Furstenberg Reara Two Tone Dress, $365, 3. BCBG Colorblocked Dress with Tulle, $258, 4. Herve Leger Two Tone Strapless Bandage Dress, $1,150, 5. Arden B. Ombre Colorblock Bandage Dress, $79, 6. Amanda Uprichard Dynasty Colorblocked Dress, $194, 7. Roxy Double Dress, $39.50, 8. Ali Ro Colorblock Beaded Dress, $365

Block on!

Friday Frocks: It’s My Party

By |January 21st, 2011|Friday Frocks|

Every girl wants to look great on her special day.  Most guys really just don’t seem to understand how important the “birthday dress” is.  Probably because they are much more interested in our “birthday suits.”  Last night, before dinner at Cecconi’s , I fussed about not having a birthday dress.  Someone pointed out that I had a ton of dresses in my closet.  “But they are all blaaaack!” I whined.  Luckily, after a little digging, I found a dress I had yet to wear and it wasn’t black! Crisis averted.  I avoided the birthday blues, but I suggest planning ahead of time.  Here are some very fun, very “birthday” dresses.

(L to R): Red Valentino Sequin Embellished Tulle Dress, $795, Herve Leger Geometric Pattern Party Dress, $2,500, Vera Wang One Shoulder Tulle Bustier Dress, $2,300, BCBG One Shoulder Tulle Dress, $398

(L to R): Alice and Olivia Vanda Bandage Shift Dress, $596, Nicole Miller Sequin and Tulle Dress, $485, Young Fabulous and Broke Hazel Dress, $295, Foley and Corinna Beaded Godet Dress, $490

Cry if you want to.

Yeah, I know you just chowed down on mass quantities of food and pie so the last thing you feel like doing is sliding into a striped frock.  However, I’m totally digging these linear looking dresses. I’m thinking that some of the crazy pieced together striped frocks will totally hide the second helping of mashed potatoes. Try one of these out for your after Thanksgiving celebrations:

Diane von Furstenberg Row Stripe Dress, $285

Opening Ceremony Pieced Stripe Long Dress, $242
