Why Did You Wear That: Almost.

By |March 12th, 2014|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

kirsten smith nycYesterday was the first day in a long time that I didn’t have to wear a coat, but a jacket instead.  The thermostat skyrocketed to an unbelievable sixty one degrees although it still felt a little frosty west by the water.  And while skin started to show and our bodies but not hearts began to thaw, it wasn’t quite warm enough to convince me that spring is really on the way.  Restaurants weren’t the slightest bit hesitant about setting up their outdoor seating to capitalize on the overzealous weather revelers.  I even joined friends for rooftop cocktails at Soho House to celebrate (and photobooth foolery followed).  And while we do have only a week left of winter an entire extra hour of sun,  at some point it still does go down.

Friday Frocks: Hot Under the Collar

By |December 27th, 2013|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

collared dresses peter pan saint laurentOne of the most noteworthy numbers sent down this Fall ’13’s runways was the plaid Peter Pan collared frock from Saint Laurent.  Encapsulating just enough of the 90’s grunge while maintaining the sweetness of a babydoll silhouette, this dress becomes a classic contradiction.  Valentino and Louis Vuitton also sent very similar styles down the catwalk.  A perfect day to night dress that will transition effortlessly from cubicle to club by trading in flat boots for spiky Mary-Janes or strappy pumps, letting your hair loose and cranking up the smokey eye.  A perfect perfect mixture of sugar and spice- ain’t that nice?

The List: Fifth Year Recap

By |December 6th, 2013|The List|

kirsten smith street styleLooking back over this past year’s posts, I thought a couple of things: 1. I don’t post nearly enough, 2. I can’t believe all of that happened in one year.  While at times it feels as if I’m not moving forward at all, taking a minute to look back (which every inspirational quote on Instagram would tell you not to do- I’m a rebel), I can see that even though it may be at a snail’s pace, I have certainly been chugging along through this thing called life.  My self awareness will now beseech me to make some changes to how I’ve been handling a few things, but I must take a not so modest moment to grin with pride about what I have accomplished by revisiting a few of my favorite posts from this blog year.  I hope you enjoy… and what were some of your favorites?

Friday Frocks: You’re My Babydoll

By |October 11th, 2013|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

Speaking of the 90’s, the one closet staple other than an oversize flannel was the babydoll dress. The bodycon dress’s polar opposite, the babydoll allows for a bit more wiggle room with a silhouette that barely skims the body.  This style is especially flattering on boyish shapes because there’s just something strange about big breasts in a babydoll dress.  So, whether you’re a darling Donna, cocaine Kelly, or bitchy Brenda, lace up  your Dr. Martens and put on your favorite floral babydoll dress.

1. Kimchi Blue Tapestry Trapeze Dress, 2. Forever 21 Flower Power Smock Dress,, 3. Joie Bernadine Dress,, 4. Kimchi Blue Prairie Rose Frock, 5. Lovers + Friends I Heart Babydoll Dress, 6. House of Harlow 1960 Adeline Dress, 7. Forever 21 Grunge Girl Floral Dress, , 8.One & Only x Urban Renewal Collared Babydoll Dress

This time Donna Martin graduates.

Setting the Mood: Smells Like Teen Spirit, Again.

By |October 8th, 2013|Setting the Mood|

90s grunge styleThe 90’s: a decade I can get behind.  Rather than leaving us with treasures like bad perms. legwarmers, and the hair bands of the 80’s, this decade was the cooler, more rebellious little sister.   I always wondered why anyone wanted to purposely look like an asshole by throwing an 80’s theme party.  Some things are meant to be left in the past.  Like your ex’s and that one school photo when you had braces and DIY bangs.

The 90’s left the legacies of grunge, garage bands and fashion trends worth repeating.  Combat boots, babydoll dresses, and anything plaid are 90’s style essentials (not to mention some of this fall’s must haves).  Unkempt hair, porcelain skin, and a deep wine pout are the beauty staples to complete your trip back in time.  Bonus points for being able to borrow your boo’s blouse.  Your flannel, is my flannel, honey.  Hello, androgyny.  Recall CkOne?  Who didn’t love My So Called Life and who can forget the queen of grunge, Ms. Courtney Love?  Starting to see why sometimes history is worth repeating?
