Friday Frocks: Always a Bridesmaid

By |July 8th, 2011|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

Ah, that special day in your life.  You’ve dreamt about it since you were a little girl.  You’re wearing the most beautiful dress you’ll probably ever wear and you get to marry the man of your dreams with your very best friends right by your side.

They were there when you called them with giddy excitement after your first date, wiped away your tears after your first fight, and called them immediately when he finally popped the question.  So why are you dressing them up like show ponies?

I get that this is “your day” but what did I ever do to you?  Why must I look like I’m wearing a prom dress (and a bad one at that)? Is this some kind of hazing?  Cause I’m pretty sure we covered that when I was holding your hair back as you tossed your cookies at your bachelorette party… You know, the time you made me drink out of a penis straw?

Not sure why so many brides insist on making their besties and bridesmaids look like giant eggplants or fluffy pink sheep, while they’ve never looked better.  I know, I know… it’s hard to find one dress that matches your color “theme”, looks good on everyone, and doesn’t upstage you.

A few things:

  1. These dresses are ugly.  They just are.
  2. Not every girl is going to look smashing in the exact same dress.  I don’t care how beautiful your besties are.  Some have hips, some have breasts, and unless you lucked into having quintuplets for best friends, none of them are going to look the same in that damn dress.
  3. When you ask us, “Will you ever wear this dress again?” we have no choice but to plaster on a smile and squeal with delight, “Yes!!!”
  4. We will never upstage you- unless you make us wear these god forsaken taffeta monstrosities. You’re the bride and you are beautiful!

Listen, I know you think that you must purchase official bridesmaids dresses, but there are plenty of great “off the rack” options that might actually make your bridesmaids happy.  To drive home my point, I have found options (all under $300) in every color of the rainbow:

1. Top Shop Yellow Cami Ruched Mesh Dress, $95, 2. Amanda Uprichard Crystal Body Silk Dress, $194,  3. Victoria’s Secret Flirty Multi-Way Dress, $79.50, 4. Presley Skye Ruffle Trim Crepe de Chine Dress, $128,  5. BCBGENERATION Cascading Ruffle Dress, $98, 6. A.B.S. by Allen Schwartz Yellow Silk Chiffon Beaded One Shoulder Dress, $237, 7. Ellen Tracy Sleeveless V-Neck Dress, $148,  8. Aqua Encom Twist Bandeau Full Maxi Dress, $129.29, 9. Aidan Mattox Floral Print Tiered Gown, $295, 10. Aidan Mattox Pansy Silk Chiffon Halter Dress, $279

11. Lauren by Ralph Lauren Chessington Shirred Dress, $130, 12. Ani Lee Taryn Dress, $299, 13. Free People Watercolor Printed Asymmetrical Dress, $128, 14. Mark + James Tie Waist Metallic Tulle Dress, $295,  15. Parker Bead Dress, $297, 16. Max and Cleo One Shoulder Gown, $178, 17. Amanda Uprichard Jessie Maxi Dress, $242, 18. LM by Mignon Cascade One Shoulder Gown, $243, 19. American Apparel Siren Dress, $75, 20. Winter Kate Barbel Lace Trim Maxi Gown, $285

So cut your gals a break, would ya?  You still want them by your side after your big day, right?

Why Did You Wear That: How Does Your Garden Grow?

By |June 8th, 2011|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how much I loved my new hobby– gardening.  While at first, I hit a little rough patch (no pun intended), with a little help from my FMIL (future mother in law) I got my gorgeous little garden in check.  Now that my buds have blossomed it’s all a matter of maintenance.  Our wonderful gardener, Antonio (Yes, we have a gardener. No, he doesn’t look like he belongs on the cover of a Jaclyn Smith novel), comes twice a month to do the heavy lifting, but the rest of the time it’s up to me.  So, every night (except for Tuesdays- that’s sprinkler day) I head outside after work with my trusty watering can and sprinkle my petals with water and lots of love.   While my mother would argue that these are not “play clothes,” I am a grown woman and I can do what I want… Okay, actually, I change when I’m digging in the dirt.  For a simple, spring sprinkle, however, this is just fine.

1. American Apparel Sheer Jersey Short Sleeve Deep V-Neck, $24, 2. CeCe Black Cashmere Boyfriend V-Neck, $124.99, 3. CC Skye Zoe Necklace, $145, 4. Forever 21 Breezy Floral Skirt, $10.50, 5. We Who See Fringe Boot, $78, 6. Free People Ruffle Slouch Socks, $16

With silver bells and cockle shells…

Why Did You Wear That: Opposite Day

By |May 31st, 2011|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

A few weeks ago, we took my fiance’s mom to the Ritz Carlton in Half Moon Bay for dinner.  To be honest, it kind of comes out of nowhere.  Like all hidden gems, if you didn’t know what you were looking for, you’d never know it existed.  The contrast of the crashing waves and the the rocky hillsides are truly breathtaking.  What the beaches of northern California lack in heat, they more than make up for with beautiful topography.

Remember opposite day?  There are days when I wish we still practiced that silly playground game.  There’s something so great and unexpected about the mish mash of opposites.  Since no one cares to play along with me, I like to play solo games of opposite day with my wardrobe.  I often mix things that don’t traditionally go together.  For example, I never like to wear something that’s overtly sexy, like a bodycon dress and five inch heels.  Instead, I throw in a curve ball; maybe top my slinky dress with a grandpa cardigan or swap out my heels for biker boots- many times I even put on my glasses.

When I put on these cargo pants, I wanted to soften them up a bit since they can skew a bit masculine.  By topping them with a sheer lace top and slipping into strappy heels, my man pants went from warfare to my fair lady.  Next time you wear something really girly like a chiffon dress, try pairing it with a leather motorcycle jacket.  You’ll be your very own walking opposite day.

1.American Apparel Sheer Rib Lace Raglan $42, 2. Kenneth Jay Lane Polished Stone Pendant Necklace, $132, 3. J Brand Houlihan Slim Cargo Pants, $231, 4. Dolce Vita Emery Leather High Heel Sandals, $205

I really love snakes and I dream of being a neurophysicist. NOT!

Friday Frocks: Anchors Away

By |May 13th, 2011|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

After asking my dad to send me the baby photo from yesterday, he got a little carried away and sent a barrage of other fair haired childhood pictures.  That’s when I saw the little gem above.  Disregarding that sassy face I’m making, check out that outfit!  Thanks, mom!  You got me started on this whole “nautical” trend early.  One might even say I was ahead of my time.

After seeing this picture, it should be no surprise that one of my alltime favorite outfits I named “the pirate” and some day I will post it on here.  I know a pirate isn’t a sailor, per se, but they both set sail on the high seas.  I like seamen… er, wait.  Anyway, nautical inspired dresses are a great way to dive right into summer.  You can never go wrong with classic navy or red and white.

1. Forever 21 Anchors & Stripes Dress, $19.80, 2.Michael Kors Striped Cashmere Knit Dress, $1,695, 3. Marc by Marc Jacobs Delfine Sailor Dress, $187.60, 4. Motel Emilia Nautical Stripe Gold Button Dress, $96.02,  5. Diane von Furstenberg Cyrani Short Sleeve Dress, $345, 6. Milly Chevron Stripe Dress, $295, 7. Rugby Abberbury Striped Rugby Dress, $128, 8. Sonia by Sonia Rykiel Sailor Dress, $552.10, 9. American Apparel Stripe Pocket Frock, $41, 10. Milly Colorblock Dena Dress, $195

Style your sailor inspired frock with gold jewelry, a bouncy ponytail and neutral shoes… or you can take a cue from two year old WhyDid and slip on a pair of oxfords.

Ahoy matey!

Why Did You Wear That: White for Your Right To Party

By |April 26th, 2011|Celebrity Style, Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

If you’d described this outfit to me without seeing it, I probably would have thought you’d been hitting up ye olde crackpipe again and would have had to stage an intervention.  However, when I saw Cameron Diaz sporting her light white ensemble a couple of weeks ago, I thought she looked incredibly chic, not like a drug induced fashion victim.

I know what you’re thinking: All white?  Isn’t that a nod to the Michelin Man? In most cases, I’d say, “Yes.”  In this instance, it comes off more angelic modern than just moronic.

The best part?  These pieces are things that you most likely already have in your closet.  I had everything minus the U-Boat watch which I borrowed stole from my fiance.  Remember to break up the white with your accessories otherwise you’ll be walking around like a baker or tampon (whichever).  I went ahead and nixed Cam’s suspenders (let’s not be completely ridiculous) and added a Mr. T gold chain instead.

1. American Apparel Unisex Sheer Jersey Short Sleeve Deep V-Neck, $24, 2. Stella & Jamie Black Leather Bomber, $352.99, 3. Toy Watch Oversize Plasteramic Watch, $225, 4. Seven For All Mankind Roxanne Skinny Flood in Clean White, $159, 5. Brian Atwood Closed Toe Platform Pump, $580, 6. Balenciaga Velo, $1,445

You gotta fight!
