Why Did You Wear That: Hot Child in the City

By |July 9th, 2013|Personal Style|

When I opted not to hop a flight to New Hampshire, I found that the city was essentially empty this past weekend.  It was like my own little Manhattan.  And while it sure is nice to have the sidewalks all to myself, it can also feel a little like the apocalypse.  Fortunately, a few friends also chose to stick around, so we made the best of our sticky and abandoned city. Roaming the streets with to-go cups (yes, we acted as if Manhattan was Cancun on spring break) and my own personal paparazzi, we kept ourselves more than a little entertained.

The only way to keep cool during hot July nights is with your hair as far off your back as possible, t-shirts with plenty of ventilation, and short shorts.  The boots may appear to be an odd choice, but with the unpredictability of downpours this past week, I’d had my sandals drenched and trekked through enough puddles posing as ponds to have learned my lesson.

Why Did You Wear That: Baby, You’re a Firework

By |July 4th, 2013|Personal Style|

This year’s Fourth of July couldn’t have fallen more perfectly on the calendar.  A four day weekend?  God bless, is right.  This, however, led many to stress out over where they’d spend such a fortuitous long weekend.  I couldn’t even begin to tell you where I was last year during the Fourth.  I’ve given it a bit of thought, and I have zero recollection.  Sadly, that has no correlation to the amount of fun that was had.  The year before, I watched fireworks alone on my rooftop, simply because it was less frightening to hear the fireworks if I could actually see them.  To be honest, fireworks scare me, but I also have an irrational fear of dragonflies, so it doesn’t hold much weight.  I do, however, love the ol’ US of A despite all its flaws.  I’ve never been one to wear a Christmas sweater or paint my face for a football game, but I do think it’s nice to give a patriotic nod to our great United States by adding a bit of red, white, and blue to your holiday ensemble– in a totally non-obvious manner, of course.

Setting the Mood: Golden Girls

By |June 10th, 2013|Setting the Mood|

On more than one occasion, read every time we’re discussing another traumatizing date or ex from hell over cocktails, my girlfriends and I revisit the idea of just going in on a townhouse and becoming the modern day Golden Girls… about thirty years early.  Anyone who knows me well, knows that I fall asleep nearly every evening listening to the witty banter between Blanche, Rose, Dorothy and Sophia.  I can’t wait to be a Golden Girl.  And in that spirit, I’m not going to wait– and neither should you.

I’m not suggesting you run to the closest American Apparel and purchase every item in gold lamé.  Not even close.  I am, however, suggesting you bring out your inner golden glow by wearing it right where everyone can see it.  Add some shimmer to your summer beauty routine with these shiny solutions.

Why Did You Wear That: Fur Sure

By |December 5th, 2012|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

Let’s just preface this with my acknowledgement that not all of you are going to like this post.  I understand and respect that… hence that is why I posted this little ditty a few weeks ago.  However, I’m a sucker for family history and, of course, a good story, so while PETA may be showing up any ol’ minute to spatter me with paint, the show must (and will) go on.

This glorious coat was my grandmother’s, who I lovingly refer to as “Ocean Eyes.”  Not only did this coat belong to my beauty of a matriarch, it was a gift… from her beautiful daughter (that would be my mom if you couldn’t do the math).  My mom bought this coat for my grandmother with her very first paycheck.  How cute is that?  The hat, that coincidentally matches, was my great grandmother, Reba’s (and yes, she had red hair).  While I felt a bit like an extra from Anna Karenina in all this fur, I found a way to make it work (which you could replicate using the faux versions, my dears).

Speaking of which– Sure, this coat would look amazing over a garnet hued ballgown, but alas, I’m not on my way to the opera this afternoon.  Instead, I’m taking my favorite furry accessory, Smitty, for a stroll.  So, why not take your glamorous look a bit downtown by pairing it with the ever so classic jeans and white t-shirt?  I love the contrast of super luxurious and All-American girl next door.  With fur (faux or otherwise) it is important to keep it simple.  In this instance, I believe there could be too much of a good thing.  Just ask the folks of Fur Hat World.

Why Did You Wear That: Take Me Home

By |May 23rd, 2012|Personal Style|

oglebay mansion wvWest Virginia tends to get a bit of a bad rap.  Whenever I tell someone that I grew up/went to school there, I get the typical antiquated responses.  “Are your parents cousins?”  “You have nice teeth though.”  “I love Virginia!”  Come on, guys.  Haven’t we gone over this?  West Virginia isn’t all hillbillies and bare feet.  The Bachelorette whisked her date to the Greenbrier in this week’s episode and as a matter of fact, it may be more Sex and the City than one might think (Sarah Jessica Parker stayed in Wheeling during the birth of her twins via surrogate).

Even when I don’t have a literal home of my own and can’t figure out where I want to be, West Virginia always feels like home to me.  With its rolling hills, friendly faces, and unrivaled natural beauty (have you seen my sorority sisters), West Virginia hardly lives up to its reputation.  It defies it.   And I’m willing to bet if I didn’t tell you, you wouldn’t even know I was there…
