Why Did or Why Don’t: Fuzzy Was He?

By |January 8th, 2014|Why Did or Why Don't?, Why Did You Wear That?|

muppets most wantedI’m not actually sure if I remember, but know I definitely did not participate in this trend the first go round.  I, for sure, had a few angora sweaters (cropped and otherwise) back in the day, but as for this especially fuzzy sweater trend, I have no recollection.  That might lead one to believe that it’s “new” but for one we all know that nothing is truly “new” and the fact that many of these styles have been labeled as “retro” I’m led to believe that perhaps I passed into a temporary coma for the fifteen minutes in the 90’s that these sweaters stole the stage.  Having seen more than a few late teen/early twenty year olds sport the trend leads me to believe we are going to have to decide whether to love it or leave it like the Muppets left Manhattan.

Why Did or Why Don’t: Back(pack) for More

By |December 26th, 2013|Why Did or Why Don't?|

backpack style fashionEvery girl needs a bag within which she can lug around all kinds of things that a man would never fathom being necessary on a day to day basis.  We stow little items that may very well come in handy when handling an unaccounted for crisis.  You call them frivolous, we say functional.  It is the Girl Scout motto afterall, “Always be prepared.”

And with this 90’s resurgence it’s no wonder we are revisiting the backpack bonanza from last year.  This time, however, it seems just about every designer that’s ever played in the handbag arena has thrown his/her pack in the ring.  From Mr. Wang to MK and Ashley, there are backpacks crafted from studded leather to luxe leopard.  Take your pack—er, pick.  But will you be partaking in this trend?  Or is it something we should leave back in social studies class?

On the upside: they do look pretty cute and who doesn’t want yet another chance to channel Cher Horowitz?  It’s also great to just fling that baby on your shoulders and continue making overly dramatic hand gestures in conversation without that pesky handbag getting in the way.  However, have you ever tried retrieving something from your stylish sack while it’s still in place on your back?  Awkward.  Trust me, you won’t be going for your iPhone nearly as often(which, could be another one to add to the upside).  And along with looking like the teenage freak that you once were while trying to fetch a stick of Big Red from your satchel, backpacks pose as open invitations to pickpocketers, especially in a city like New York.

WhyDid or WhyDon’t: Granola Bears Need to Birkenstop

By |November 26th, 2013|Why Did or Why Don't?|

birenstocks-socksSeeing as I’ve finally made my way across the country and up the coast to what is known as Northern California, I figured this might be the appropriate time to address the footwear trend trying to make a comeback.  The hippies’ Havaianas, the tree huggers’ Tevas, the Birkenstock.  Now, I realize I’m really pigeon holing the fine folks north of San Luis Obispo, but let’s not forget that I spent a sufficient amount of time surrounded by more North Face and Patagonia than my eyes and closet could handle.  Dare I remind you of a birthday spent at Palo Alto’s Il Fornaio where I was stared at like a freak for wearing something other than polar fleece?

Popular since the 1980’s these practical over fashionable sandals really had their hey day back in the early 90’s.  But just like all that is old, they have become new again.  Isabel Marant made a designer version and we all know what Isabel Marant did for the wedge sneaker (not to mention the mayhem that ensued for the H&M capsule collection).  Even Phoebe Philo of Celine sent them down the runway

birkenstock isabel marantDoc Martens have already made a comeback (as seen in the Wrecking Ball video) as well as Timberland boots (they’ve even got a collaboration with throwback brand Stussy), but are all of the 90’s footwear fads ready for a resurgence?  And will you be hugging trees in your Birks?

Why Did or Why Don’t: Playing with Fire

By |November 20th, 2013|Celebrity Style, Why Did or Why Don't?, Why Did You Wear That?|

jennifer lawrenceTeens and adults alike across the globe are waiting with bated breath for the Friday release of the second installment of the Hunger Games trilogy, Catching Fire.  All of them except for me.  I never bothered to pick up the books… you know I don’t do mainstream… so I have no idea what they are really even about except that people are pretty obsessed with the series’ heroine, Katniss Everdeen and her real life identity, Jennifer Lawrence.

While I won’t be watching the movie, I have been watching Jennifer’s red carpet arrivals and Miss Lawrence wore this Christian Dior gown to the Los Angeles premiere on Monday.  You know I’m usually a huge proponent for anything that doesn’t require pants (or bra), but has her crotch baring, barely there getup gone too far?  Can this lady do no wrong or does the emperor have no clothes… literally?

jennifer lawrenceLady Lawrence has been on a fashion world tour, blowing my mind at every stop.  Last Friday, she showed my other favorite cleavage, aka “side boob” in a different Christian Dior concoction and I’m loving the dark lip, new cropped hair, and edgy but sweet frock.

So, what are you thoughts on Katniss’s Christian Dior at the LA premiere?

WhyDid or Why Don’t: The Rest Is a Little Scrunchie

By |October 16th, 2013|Why Did or Why Don't?|

Alright, when I said the 90’s revival was something I could get behind, I seem to have forgotten about one trend that probably should stay tucked safely inside that decades’ time capsule.  The scrunchie.  Ah yes, that fabric covered hair tie of school days past.  Be it in your hair or on your wrist, you were nobody without a color coordinated scrunchie.  Despite the upside of the scrunchie (less stress on your tresses), I’m not sure it’s one hair trend that I want to see resurrected.  And isn’t that why they invented these?

As Carrie Bradshaw so adeptly stated in an episode of Sex and the City:

“Okay, but here’s the thing. Here’s my crucial point.  No women who works at W Magazine and lives on Perry Street would be caught dead at a hip downtown restaurant wearing a scrunchie!”

But alas, designers like Vivienne Westwood, Ashish, Missoni, and Marc Jacobs sent looks down the catwalk accessorized with this beauty throwback (you can buy a $95 Missoni one here).  Even “it” girls Fearne Cotton and Cressida Bonas have been seen keeping stray strands at bay with the aid of a scrunchie.  Former “it” girls all over the trend?  Lisa Turtle, all three Tanner girls, and, gasp, even Sarah Jessica Parker herself.
