Speaking of cellphones, while sitting at dinner with friends one night, the topic of Blackberry versus iPhone came up. I have always had a theory that New Yorkers are more Blackberry users while LA folks seem to be bigger fans of the iPhone. While it was three of us at the table (myself and a girlfriend having Blackberries) the odd man out was my friend with an iPhone.

She nearly chucked a bowl of edamame at us when we proclaimed that Blackberry users are actually using their phones for “work” and iPhone users are just having “fun.” I, personally, can not imagine trying to peck out an email to a client on that creepy touch screen. (I’ve seen what auto complete is capable of). I can understand that “creative” people need a phone with more “graphic” capabilities, but in the grand scheme of things, I think iPhones are just fun and flash and Blackberries are all business.

What I really want to know is what you think? Do you have an iPhone or a Blackberry? Is one more serious than the other? Tell me!!!

Another week, another list. World, you never cease to amaze me!

1. Tents on the beach. I mean, what are you doing? Camping or tanning?
2. Speaking of the beach- people who walk too close to our towel and kick sand all over you. Appreciate that.
3. Fake glasses. You don’t even need glasses.
4. Sideways hats. You are not Marky Mark and this is not the Funky Bunch.
5. Copycats. I know, I know. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, blah, blah. But sometimes it’s just really f#%*@ing annoying.
6. Letterman jackets.
7. Naysayers. I say it’s black and no matter what, you’ll say it’s white. It is not constantly opposite day. Cut it out.
8. Payphones. Seriously, who the eff can you call for a quarter?
9. Dr. Phil. How do you still have a show? Don’t you have your own problems to solve?
10. The Jersey Shore cast ringing the NYSE opening bell. Our country is officially a joke.

I mean, really? It was 7pm on a Wednesday evening. WHERE are you going?

WHAT are you shopping for?

Why? Why? WHY?

Listen, I appreciate a gal who puts pride into her appearance, but this? Just too much. There certainly is a time and place for everything. I am not, by ANY means, suggesting that homegirl should be strutting through Target with a Juicy tracksuit and Uggs (heaven forbid), but there is such a thing as overkill. Regardless of the fact that her outfit looks like a leftover from the Clueless wardrobe closet, she is totally overdressed for running errands. And no, I don’t believe she is going somewhere super fun afterwards and just had to pop into Target on the way.

Always keep in mind the place you are going and what is appropriate attire. No one wants to be the only one who jumps in the pool at a party.

All I know is that I hope she got the stock boy’s digits at least.

Once while home visiting my mom in West Virginia, she nearly threw my Blackberry at my head a la Naomi Campbell because I just would not/could not put it down. She was frustrated that I was constantly tapping away on it and not listening to her (little does she know that I am capable of two things at once!). I do, however understand her concern. I was being a bit obnoxious about it.

So when my phone conveniently fell into the toilet the last time I was home, my mom was secretly elated. (I wouldn’t be surprised if she paid off that toilet to trip me so I’d drop my phone). After that whole “rice” suggestion not really panning out, I was sitting around without a phone until my replacement was shipped. As mentioned, her computer is from 1999 and her home is not equipped with Wifi. Sigh. What’s a girl to do? How on earth was I going to keep up with Twitter updates and update my Facebook status?

We are an incredibly overstimulated society. There are far too many distractions for us. Family dinners are nearly non existent and the ones that are usually are drowned out by the garble on TV. Kids are being diagnosed left and right with ADD when they really are probably just overstimulated with all the Hannah Montana and Dora the Explorer going on. No one remembers how to pick up the phone anymore let alone pen a handwritten letter. We don’t even use full words anymore. “C U L8R!”

It’s so very easy to get caught up in our little social bubbles that we forget to just be totally quiet. When’s the last time you really had a moment to yourself? Complete peace and quiet?

I suggest taking an entire afternoon or even a weekend if you can muster up the courage to completely unplug and disconnect with the outside world so that you can re-connect with yourself. I’m willing to bet that the world will carry on as normal with or without your BBM’s.

You know when you bite into an apple and it’s mealy? You chuck it across the room, nearly vom, and swear off the fruit forever. That’s letting one bad apple spoil the whole bunch and sometimes we do the very same thing with our relationships. We get burned one time and then swear off the entire species.

I have been there, my friends. With my last doozy of a relationship, I swore I was going to join the nunnery (my dad was pleased with this idea) and never ever date again. For a while, I actually did just that. I may as well have carried around a can of Man Raid. I was repelling men left and right because I wanted nothing to do with them. Some people suggest that the best way to get over someone is to get under someone else (maybe not literally, but you get what I’m saying). I think that’s basically the worst advice in the world. It’s merely a Band-Aid and a temporary fix. It’s like trying to hot glue a hole in the Hoover Dam. Only a matter of time before that baby bursts and it all starts flooding.

That being said, it’s fine to take some time off of the dating scene for a while to heal, but there is no reason to be a complete and utter psychopath to some possibly wonderful men. I was so effed up from my break up that I blew of some great guys (and threw some crazy temper tantrums due to my trust issues).  Just because I found a worm in my last apple, doesn’t mean that every apple there after is going to suck.

You just have to take a blind leap of faith and take another bite. An apple a day…

Do you remember playing peek-a-boo as a child? Oh, the olden days. When things were so much simpler and there was far less bullshit to deal with on a day to day basis. Sigh. Well, I’ve been channeling my inner five year old and decided that playing a little game of peek-a-boo with your clothing isn’t such a bad idea. I love unexpected sexy, but please take this one with caution and follow my suggestions explicitly. This is something that can go terribly awry and have you looking like a Jersey Shore reject if executed improperly. I’m loving sheer slouchy see through t’s as a comfy, yet sexy top with jeans. The trick is to pair it with a cropped cami or matching (tonal) bralette and keep it covered up on the bottom half.

Before heading down to Temecula for our early Saturday morning adventure (more to come on that), we stopped at The Grove to pick up some essentials (read: Kiehl’s). Seeing as I haven’t been to a “mall” in quite some time, I had forgotten the type of people who frequent malls on a Friday nights. That being said, we opted not to dine in The Grove and headed to a place suggested by a friend called Jar.

When we walked in, I hadn’t been sure what to expect being as I’m not from Los Angeles and I really never know what the hell to expect here. I was pleasantly surprised to see a warm and sexy room that had a Boogie Nights (sans mass amounts of drugs and girls on rollerskates). I felt a little underdressed because I’d just planned on being in a car for two hours and had just thrown on a jersey maxi dress and flip flops. The room was large and surprisingly empty for a Friday night.

We were seated at a nice table along the wall and our waiter came over promptly with the cocktail menu and a smile. It seemed possible that he would break into song and dance at any moment, but thankfully I appreciate overzealousness. We started off with the crab deviled eggs which were absolutely unbelievable. You had me at deviled eggs, but adding the crab really took them over the top. There were a lot of them for just two people, but since they were so delish, we had no trouble polishing them off.

For our main, we shared a porterhouse steak with roasted asparagus and mashed potatoes as sides. The meat was sliced for us upon serving and was cooked to our specification. The meat was juicy and delish and they offered several different sauces, but they really weren’t even necessary. The asparagus was fine, but unremarkable. The mashed potatoes were creamy and pure, not overly seasoned.  There was more than enough food for two (which is good news for Smitty who was stashed in his bag below the table).

Despite being totally stuffed, we couldn’t resist the brownie and ice cream for dessert. Luckily, it was the perfect size after gorging yourself on steak. It was just enough to get a taste of chocolate without combusting onto our singing waiter.

I would certainly go back again for a good, quiet dinner with friends or date with a cute boy. (This is not a “scene” if that’s what you are looking for).  So trade in your sequin mini for your elastic waist pants and head over to Jar for your next special occasion.
