In the past month, Rosie Huntington Whiteley has made headlines for wearing her underpinnings on the outside- on more than one red carpet occasion. Personally, I love the look as I’ve worn a nightgown out on the town more than a few times, but it seems to have caught many celebrity fashion onlookers off guard. How on Earth does a woman other than Blanche Devereaux wear a slip outside the confines of the boudoir? Well, let’s be serious, many dresses currently on the market leave less to the imagination than a silky slip of fabric. To me, the implication of what lies underneath is much sexier than four thousand strategically placed cut outs, sheer panels, or up to there slits. Should you want to follow Rosie’s lead, below is one way to make a very glamourous nightie’s night out complete.

The red carpet was red hot this year at the 87th Annual Academy Awards. While it poured down rain in Los Angeles, causing a hot box effect with plastic tenting literally wilting A-list hairstyles and melting perfectly made up faces, nominees and future winners did not let us down in the dress department. While there was nothing truly offensive, there were also very few that inspired any standing ovations, which would be saved for John Legend, Common, Patricia Arquette, and Graham Moore. Saint Laurent on both Dakota Johnson and Margot Robbie were two of my early favorites. When Rosamund Pike arrived in a perfectly fitted Givenchy frock only two months after giving birth, I shed a tear and poured out a little bit of alcohol, which my dog quickly lapped up. A few debatable dresses were worn by Lupita Nyong’o, Nicole Kidman, and Felicity Jones. I’m not sure why, but Khloe Kardashian was recruited by E! for her opinions on red carpet arrivals, to which she held nothing back. I zoned out from the actual awards show after Neil Patrick Harris’s first failed joke, but I did catch Julianne Moore’s well deserved acceptance speech, Common’s freckles, Lady Gaga’s epic cover of The Sound of Music, and the absence of Joan Rivers in the Memoriam.

Red Carpet Recap: American Snooze-ic Awards

Oh, sorry. I just woke up. I can only assume that my deep slumber was induced around the same time I slammed my hand to my forehead upon One Direction taking the stage to accept the award for Artist of the Year. Either that or I had too much wine. Maybe both. In any case last night was the 42nd annual American Music Awards held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles and hosted by a basically blacked out and slurring Pitbull (Mr. Worldwide, if you will). While I look back on the evening, I can’t actually tell you who won or gush over any particular performance (except maybe Lorde’s), but there are a few key things I did deduce from the evening. If you do not already own a leotard, get one. Without a nary Beyonce, Miley, or Katy in the auditorium, there was no lack of spandex to be seen. Also, J. Lo and Fergie made the message clear that the old guard hasn’t gone anywhere and a Pilates class sure doesn’t hurt.

As far as the red carpet, there were about fifteen “celebrities” who actually walked it, leaving my options for best, worst, and WTF very limited. Black was the overall favorite for the evening and the ladies who donned the official color of New York, looked sleek, stunning, and sophisticated whether in long gowns or short shifts. The skin showing of choice last night was most certainly the legs with sky high slits as well as micro minis. Green, coral, a bit of navy, and peachy flesh tone were the favored hues worn by songstresses. Rita Ora was pleasantly surprised to find out that she was the only one wearing a skin flattering yellow frock.

The favored hairstyle for the evening was soft tousled waves more often than not in buttery blonde. Manicures were more like claws with long pointed tips not to be outdone by fingers covered in elaborate rings on multiple fingers. Statement clutches and sky high heels finished off the ladies’ looks.

And we can’t forget the fellas. Wyclef Jean and Imagine Dragons channeled their rocker style in tailored tees and leather, while Aloe Blacc spelled it out for us. Nick Jonas’ suit made me feel even more awkward than his crotch grabbing Flaunt Magazine spread. I quipped that I hoped 5 Seconds of Summer were also five seconds from a shower. Magic looked like lost tourists who had wandered onto the red carpet after a tour of Hollywood Boulevard (rude!) and Sam Smith seemed to have forgotten his socks.

I wonder if Pitbull’s hangover is as bad as mine.

Why Did You Wear That: F*ck It. We’re Done with Pants.

Celebrities just can’t seem to keep their pants on and this time it doesn’t involve hacked photos, the iCloud, or Miley Cyrus. This past week alone, a slew of celebrities have forgone covering up their bits and pieces by wearing barely there ensembles leaving very little to the imagination. From Miranda Kerr to Cara Delevigne, sheer panels gave us peeks at their toned thighs, tummies, and places Pilates pays off. Even North West got in on the action while accompanying mom, Kim, to the Givenchy show in Paris. Why shouldn’t a toddler have a custom creation when sitting front row at Paris Fashion Week? Step your game up Gymboree. This nearly nude trend is nothing new though, as we saw here on Erin Fetherston two Octobers ago.

But before you figure me for head conductor of the Hater Express, let us take a moment to recall when I wore this For Love & Lemons dress sans pants last winter. Brrr. While, part of me fears for humanity’s eyesight as we all know that once something is worn by a Kardashian, it’s basically considered mainstream and one can expect to see it in every mall in America, there are some upsides to this trend. One such silver lining is an opportunity to showcase those Barry’s Bootcamp legs you shelled out $30 a pop for. Another, of course, is good ventilation, which we all know aids in the prevention of the epidemic known as thigh chafing. Lastly, pants are just a hassle anyway. The first thing I do when I get home is remove them, so let’s just cut out the middle man and stop wearing pants all together. F*ck it.

It’s a wonder I was even able to complete this post as I spent the majority of last night’s 66th Annual Emmy Awards in the waiting room at CityMD where I tried to convince them that it was imperative to change the channel from NY1 to the Emmy’s so that I could complete my work. No dice, but fortunately I’d planned ahead by recording the show before stepping out. Don’t worry guys, after being poked and prodded and nearly regurgitating on a tongue depressor, turns out it’s just a sore throat.

Instead of sipping on champagne, I gargled with salt water and settled in to catch up on what I’d missed. Clearly, what I’d missed was almost every single show that’s currently on television. I’ve been so busy watching re-runs of The Golden Girls, that I wasn’t even aware that shows like Masters of Sex or Treme existed. But let’s be serious, it’s an honor just to be nominated and sure it’s exciting to win (full list of winners here), I’m only here for the fashion.

Fairly early into the red carpet arrivals, there was a theme brewing. If you weren’t wearing red, you were wearing white. From Julia Louis Drefus’s simple and well tailored Carolina Herrera to Claire Danes’ intricately detailed Givenchy, there was no chance of blending into the carpet in these crimson creations. White may very well be one of the hardest colors to wear, let alone be photographed in. However, last night’s presenters and nominees were picture perfect in their picks, namely Laverne Cox in Marc Bouwer and Anna Chlumsky in Zac Posen.

The rest of the carpet was a veritable rainbow with Kerry Washington in an orange Prada, Samira Wiley in a curry colored Christian Siriano, Keke Palmer in cobalt Rubin Singer, and Zoey Deschanel in an Oscar de la Renta bright pop of pink. Hayden Panetierre proved that pregnant women most certainly can wear sequins in her Lorena Sarbu and others played with color and patterns as made apparent by Louise Roe’s Monique Lhuillier and Julie Bowen’s Peter Som.

My winners included January Jones in a beautifully constructed red Prabal Gurung gown (though her hair could have used some help), budding fashion favorite, Kiernan Shipka in a steely grey Antonio Berardi, and Halle Berry whose Elie Saab was a color that was clearly made for her- seriously, it’s like Jay-Z blue. Does it have a Pantone number? Those who didn’t fair so well? Katherine Heigl is no stranger to the worst dressed list and last night was no different as she showed up wearing something that actually looked like something I’ve seen on The Golden Girls. Lena Dunham, bless her, wore a cupcake confection that left her looking more silly than chic. I applaud her new hair, however. When Sarah Paulson arrived on the red carpet, I must admit at first I was intrigued, but I have the feeling her gown was the type that is beautiful in person, but does not translate to TV. Somebody’s stylist needs get a Polaroid camera.

While not everyone was fashion award worthy, if this red carpet is any indication of what’s to come this award season, I’m looking forward to tuning in. I may even start watching shows from this decade.
