Setting the Mood: Spooked

By |October 24th, 2011|Setting the Mood|

It seems like every year people are getting more and more into the Halloween spirit.  Maybe I just don’t recall it from when I was little or maybe people are feeling like they need a bit more of an escape and dressing up as someone else for a day does just the trick.  I think it makes everyone feel like they are finally able to get in touch with their inner “dark side.”  We all have one afterall.

Setting the Mood: Who’s Afraid?

By |October 17th, 2011|Setting the Mood|

Pumpkins aren’t the only stars of fall.  Many a city girl may venture off in search of an orchard in order to capture herself the first perfect ruby red fruit of the season.  For some reason, all the apple picking makes me think of plaid and capes… which then leads me to think about one of my favorite storybook characters, Little Red Riding hood.  There’s such a combination of wide eyed naivete and dark mischief to that tale.  And I think there lies a little of each in all of us.  Fall is the most magical season of the year (and a good reason to live in the Northeast).  There’s just something about it that stirs up nostalgia and creates excitement.  Yet another one of life’s little contradictions.

Are you afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?

Setting the Mood: Don’t be a Tragedy

By |October 10th, 2011|Setting the Mood|

The Great Gatsby is considered one of the best literary works of the 20th century.  (If you haven’t read it, you really should– don’t wait for the movie remake with Leo– that’s cheating).  It’s also often cited as inspiration for parties, weddings, even runway collections.  While there is no denying the glamour that was the roaring 20’s, it seems that perhaps we’ve forgotten what a tragic story The Great Gatsby really is.  Sure Gatsby threw one heck of a party, but let’s remember (SPOILER ALERT) that this romanticized tale ends in multiple deaths and a suicide.  So, next time you’re looking to throw a theme party full of old world glitz, perhaps you should just notate the attire as “Roaring 20’s” rather than “Gatsby.”  The clothes were fabulous.  The plotline?  Tragic.

Setting the Mood: Greyscale

It’s not true what they say.  It does rain in California.  Especially, Northern California.  Today it has rained all day.  I can’t lie though.  Rain is sometimes a welcome change.  The whole cheerful kingdom thing can get old and makes me long for a little grey weather.  A little reality.  I enjoy the rain so much that I actually waited to go for a run until it started raining.  A neighbor stopped me cause he was worried about my well being, but I let him know that I was enjoying the downpour.  I know.  How very emo/hipster of me.  There’s just something refreshing about it.  You don’t have to feel guilty about holing up for the day and indulging in a book or comfort food.  That said… let’s hope the sun comes out tomorrow.

In honor of Gossip Girl’s return to television, this week’s inspiration is brought to you by the letters S and B.  Whether you’re team Serena or Team Blair, there’s no denying that these ladies have serious style.  New York is one of the most magical places during the fall.  I don’t know what exactly it is, but I think anyone who’s spent a fall in the Big Apple can attest to that special something that’s  in the air.  Now, I know Serena is taking the season off in sunny California, but I’m still channeling the sumptuous accessories that a city girl might add to her collection this fall-  the perfect shoes, scarf, and clutch for catching cabs and ducking into the hot club du jour.
