Gift Guide: Le Geek C’est Chic

By |November 30th, 2011|Gift Guide|

If you can’t beat em… join em.  Since, we’re clearly overly socialized and technology is only going to get more intense from here, might as well look good while we’re surfing the web/catching up on reading/chatting with friends/etc.  You know how I know tech is a big deal?  Go to one of your favorite fashion shopping sites… I’m willing to bet they now have a tab under accessories that says, “Tech Accessories.”  I would, however, like to point out that there are few and far between (if any) accessories for the Blackberry.  Coincidence?  … Anyway, a gift that is certain to delight even your most tech savvy friends is something to outfit her favorite electronic device.  Since it will probably spend more time on the table than hidden in the depths of her bag, it’s going to need to look good too.

Smart is the New Pretty: Connection Failed

By |November 30th, 2011|Smart Is the New Pretty, WhyDid Wisdom|

We are so attached to our computers and smart phones, it seems nearly impossible to even get through a dinner without someone (or everyone) picking up his or her phone to text, Tweet, check-in, or share a photo.  It begs me to ask the question- have we become TOO social?  And have we forgotten what the word “social” really means?

Perhaps it’s time to put down our gadgets and make real life connections– with the people who are right in front of our faces.  Sure we are all “connected” but are we really “connecting” at all anymore?

Gift Guide: Glamour Girl

By |November 29th, 2011|Gift Guide|

Oh yes, it’s that time of year again.  Not only is it time to crank up the heat and hibernate, it’s also time to spend money we may or may not have on gifts for people who may or may not appreciate them.  I’m kidding, I’m kidding.  Everyone with a soul appreciates a thoughtful and gracious gift.  So, in the off chance that you do have any money left after Brown Thursday, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, it’s time to start WhyDid’s Holiday Gift Guides.  I don’t mean to toot my own horn (beep beep) but I’m pretty great at gift giving.  Is that something I can add to my resume?

Let’s start with the toughest on the list, shall we?  There’s always that one person who has (or at least wants) everything.  We all know someone like her.  Hell, she may even be you.  Why not please your fickle friend with something shiny?  Something sparkly.  Something so glamourous she couldn’t possibly turn up her perfect little nose at your offerings.

Setting the Mood: A Life Wrapped in Cashmere

By |November 28th, 2011|Setting the Mood|

I may be what some call a “snob” when it comes to knitwear.  You can thank Henri Bendel for that.  You see, I had the pleasure of working in the product development/buying department of their private label knitwear.  While, they sell silk and merino wool sweaters as well, there really is nothing quite like the soft sumptuous hand of cashmere.  Once I’d gotten my hands on it, there was no turning back for me.  I’m not sure if anyone has ever said it before but I will gladly be the first to say, “If it’s not cashmere, I can’t be bothered.”  After experiencing all that is cashmere, I couldn’t imagine wanting to wear anything else.  Bendel’s, quite famous for their cashmere, spun this fine fiber into the likes of pajamas, pillows, blankets, slippers- you name it, it was cashmere.  They have since downsized, but I kind of feel like a life wrapped in cashmere is how the good Lord intended it.

Why Did You Eat That: Bah Hamantaschen

By |November 28th, 2011|Recipes, Why Did You Eat That?|

With the holiday music comes the holiday baking.  While many opt for gingerbread and sugar cookies, I happen to be quite fond of hamantaschen.  I’m a little late to the game on these (or at least I never knew how to pronounce the name of these sweet treats), I’ve fallen hard and fast.  A traditional cookie made during the Jewish holiday of Purim, they are sure to delight any sweet toothed cookie lover.  While they look pretty fancy and complicated… again, I made them.  If I can do it- so can you.

Ingredients:

  • 2/3 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 1/2  cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • dash of salt
  • Fruit filling (I used apricot, raspberry, and almond)

Directions:

  1. Cream the butter with sugar. Add egg and continue creaming until smooth.
  2. Add the vanilla.
  3. Stir in flour, baking powder, and salt until a ball of dough is formed (a food processor would have been helpful for this).
  4. Chill for 2-3 hours, or overnight.
  5. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  6. Taking 1/4 of the dough, roll out on a lightly floured board to a thickness of 1/8 inch.
  7. Cut circles of dough with a drinking glass or round cookie-cutter.
  8. With your finger put water around the rim of the circle. Fill with 1 teaspoon of filling and fold into three-cornered cookies. (Press two sides together, and then fold the third side over and press the ends together.)
  9. Bake on a well-greased cookie sheet 10-16 minutes, until the tops are golden. (I prefer for them to be a bit lighter, so stay near the oven- they cook fast).

Be sure to let these cool before boxing up or trying to serve/eat.  It takes a little bit of time before the fruit filling goes from molten lava back to solid again.  I may or may not know this because I splattered it down the front of my face and shirt.  Patience is a virtue, my friends.  You also might notice I rolled out the dough on tin foil (DOH!).  Wax paper would be a more prudent choice- but beggars can’t be choosers and it all worked out in the end.  So, be sure to add these delicious (and impressive) cookies to your holiday baking repertoire.
