Why Did You Eat That: Game On!

By |September 20th, 2011|Recipes, Why Did You Eat That?|

While the days of backyard barbecues and beach volleyball may be dwindling, there’s no need to fret.  The world is not ending, my friend.  Nothing warms the heart (or the home) like entertaining close friends in your very own cozy abode.  The temperature is dropping and it seems to get dark by the time you’ve arrived home from a long day at the office, so it’s easy to become a bit of a homebody.  But maybe being a homebody isn’t such a bad thing.

The Plan:

Gather a group of your most playful pals for a rousing and raucous game night complete with old school board games, yummy snacks, and silly prizes.

The Invitation:

Start things off and set the tone for the evening by sending out a personalized Mad Libs invite.  Be sure to include all of the relevant information (date, address, time, etc.) and leave blanks for silly adjectives and nouns.  Get creative and be sure to ask guests to share their Mad Libs creations.

The Menu:

Game night isn’t the type of gathering that requires a fancy sit down dinner.  Keep things casual by setting up a “self serve” table with bites that are easy to eat while rolling the dice with one hand.  Mini quiche, delicious dip, and tiny desserts are great options for fun finger food. Arrange your no fuss fare on gameboards and embellish with gamepieces to keep the festive theme consistent.

Why Did You Wear That: Emmy’s Ladies in Red

By |September 18th, 2011|Red Carpet Recap, Why Did You Wear That?|

Tonight at the 63rd Annual Emmy Awards, there was one trend that was made very, very apparent.  The color of the evening?  Red, red, red.  From Kathy Griffin to Lea Michele, Hollywood’s small screen starlets were sporting this award season’s hottest color.  From shiny satin to scattered sequins, red popped on all skin tones and hair colors.  Guess these beauties were reading WhyDid (wink, wink).  The red carpet has never looked so good.

Real People, Real Style: A Rose By Any Other Name

By |September 14th, 2011|Real People Real Style|

I don’t know a girl who doesn’t delight in receiving roses. The rose is beautiful all on its own. It doesn’t need any extra accoutrements. No baby’s breath. No carnations. It is a straightforward beauty. I would go as far as calling it a “stand alone” flower. I first discovered Rose a la Mode when she was kinda enough to link back to me on a post about the return of flare leg jeans. When I perused her blog, I was impressed with her clean, straightforward, and totally relatable style. She wasn’t all about putting on something cuuuurazy for the shock value. I could tell this was really a peek into Linda’s life and her closet– and for that, I was an immediate fan.

Name: Linda Rose

Wearing: A White T-shirt and Wide leg jeans both from Gap, Platform Sandals from Target, DKNY White Watch, Charm Bracelet

Occupation: Part Time Blogger and Housewife

Hometown/Current Town: St. Louis, MO

I would describe my style as: Easy clothes that everyone can wear…with some extras to make it special

I can’t leave the house without: Burts Bees Lip Balm

Based on wardrobe alone, if I could live in any time period, it would be: The 70’s! I love how glamorous everything was!

Best/biggest splurge (worth every penny): The best hair straightner money can buy. I have frizzy hair and those things work magic for me!

Best fashion advice I’ve ever received: You can wear anything you want as long as you’re confident in it.

Biggest fashion pet peeve (a trend that just needs to go away): Tapered pants (as in baggy on top and skinny at the ankle). They are just not flattering—I don’t care how skinny you are!

What I would tell my 13 year old self: Keep current with the jean trends – that will give away your style intellect every time.

Weirdest beauty trick that I swear by: I don’t use conditioner because I heard that it can burn your hair if you use a flat iron after. I stopped using

conditioner that day and it’s worked for me.

Don’t care if it ever goes out of style, I’m going to keep wearing: SCARVES! They keep me so much warmer in the winter, I couldn’t live without them!

I would love to trade closets with: Jennifer Anniston!

Fun fact: I only started to find my style after I got married in 2005. Before then I had no sense of style.

Setting the Mood: Why I Autumn….

By |September 12th, 2011|Setting the Mood|

I’m really getting into the autumnal swing of things… even though fall doesn’t officially start until September 23rd this year.  If you want to get all technical, we still have another week and a half of summer left.  To me, fall symbolizes quality time spent with family and friends.  There’s nothing I like more than getting cozy with a group of friends for a rousing game night complete with warm cocktails and yummy comfort food.  This is the perfect occasion for a soft, fuzzy blouse, snuggly scarf, and killer boots.  Just because you’re staying in, doesn’t mean you have to dress down.

Look for Less: Brace Yourself for the Fall

By |September 11th, 2011|Look for Less, Why Did You Wear That?|

Some of our very favorite celebrity fashionistas hit the tents this week to take in the shows at Lincoln Center.  While some were wearing their summer best til the bitter end, others debuted their new fall favorites.  I love seeing the ladies bracing themselves for the cooler temperatures.  To me, fashion week is like “back to school” for the fashion elite.  Though it may seem confusing (we’re seeing spring shows in the fall- and vice versa), this is second nature to fashion week veterans.  Below are some of my favorite fall looks from our stylish celebs:

1. Rebecca Beeson Smoke Cotton Modal T-Shirt, $29.24, 2. Anthropologie Cuffed Tweed Crops, $118, 3. BCBG Max Azria Black Ponte Cropped Blazer, $143, 4. Kors by Michael Kors Divina Lace Up Bootie, $250

1. J. Crew Silk Lucinda Blouse, $98, 2. REISS Katiya Anthracite Sequin Short, $245, 3. Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent Arizona Faux Fur Vest, $249, 4. Rachel Zoe Suede Platform Sandal, $295, 5. Lodis Audrey Envelope Clutch, $78

1. Wyatt Navy Chiffon V-Neck Pleated Blouse, $88, 2.  Motel Ginger Casual Tailored Shorts, $76.84, 3. Rebecca Minkoff Woven Infinity Clutch, $350, 4. Madewell Bandelier Blazer, $178, 5. Islo Isabella Lorussa Boot, $275
