Friday Frocks: Block Party

By |April 15th, 2011|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

A couple of months ago, I pointed out the oh so colorful, oh so fun colorblocking trend that we had seen all over the runways and on our favorite stars.  I even showed you how to recreate the look.  But alas, it can be tricky not to mention treacherous trying to pull this look off for the untrained fashionista.

And why wouldn’t we have a little history lesson on this fine Friday?

While this trend feels fresh for spring, it’s not actually new.  Much like all fashion, it’s been recycled and given a new spin.  The original colorblocked dress above is from Yves Saint Laurent circa 1965.  Piet Mondrian’s Composition II in Red, Blue, and Yellow (1930)  was used for the inspiration and this simple shift became iconic.

Below are some modern takes on the colorblock trend for you to try out yourself:

1. Forever 21 Colorblock Bodycon Dress, $15.80, 2. Diane von Furstenberg Reara Two Tone Dress, $365, 3. BCBG Colorblocked Dress with Tulle, $258, 4. Herve Leger Two Tone Strapless Bandage Dress, $1,150, 5. Arden B. Ombre Colorblock Bandage Dress, $79, 6. Amanda Uprichard Dynasty Colorblocked Dress, $194, 7. Roxy Double Dress, $39.50, 8. Ali Ro Colorblock Beaded Dress, $365

Block on!

WhyDid Wisdom: Body Modification, Body Dysmorphia. Tomato, To-mah-to.

By |April 14th, 2011|WhyDid Wisdom|

Oh, why hello there.  Sorry, suburbia has sucked me in like a black hole and as much as I’m sure you’ve enjoyed staring at my mug for the last two days, I’m back.  With lots of content and lots to say.  Speaking of faces- what the heck has Lady Gaga done to hers?

It appears Ms. Gaga has had some filler treatment done by contacting the best cosmetic surgeon for fillers in melbourne.  While this is concerning to many (it’s actually hard for me to look at), she insists that it’s totally normal.  In an interview with Harpers Bazaar, she explains that her “horns” have always been there and claims she was- you guessed it – born this way.  It just so happens these puppies are just sprouting out now.

Also in the interview, Lady Gaga proclaimed she has never, nor would she ever, get plastic surgery, insisting that it promotes insecurity.  Um?  I don’t even know how to respond to that.  While I appreciate Lady’s encouragement to young people who are trying to find themselves, I think it is hypocritical for almost anyone in Hollywood or show business to start pointing fingers or talking morals.  When have you ever seen a photo of Gaga in a pair of sweats with a bare face and a ponytail?  I get it.  Her costumes, makeup, and theatrics are all a part of her “marketing” but isn’t hiding behind a facade kind of insecure?  She is constantly playing a character.  She is well spoken, but her answers are calculated.  I hardly call that “being yourself.”  She’s incredibly devoted to her fans, but wouldn’t showing them the “real” Gaga help them connect to her even more?

In regards to plastic surgery, I tend to agree it would be done by professinoal plastic surgeons.  Too much snipping, tweaking, and tucking is never a good thing.  However, this all goes back to the impossibly high beauty standards of the “celebrity.”  Young girls everywhere see photos of perfectly retouched models, movies with women who make a living off of their looks, and pop stars who are manufactured to be practically perfect.  How in the world could they ever live up to that?  No one bothers to show them the behind the scenes footage or the raw photos.

Are any of us really “born this way” or are we all hiding behind some type of facade?

Why Did You Wear That: Sheer Genius

By |April 12th, 2011|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

This spring it’s okay to let it all hang out.  What I mean is that the amount of sheer fabrics on the runway was enough to make Madonna blush.  Couple that with the whole “underwear as outerwear” trend and you’re in for a serious game of peek-a-boo –and I’m not talking the version you play with your niece.

While this trend may seem a bit risque and a little overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be.  Adding a little sheer fabric to your outfit is a great way to show skin in an unexpected manner.  It’s sexy without being totally obvious.  Just make sure to apply this trend in small doses.  And NEVER wear a sheer bottom unless, of course, you’re frolicking on the beaches of St. Tropez.  (I know that seems self explanatory, but one can never be too careful).

I’ve recreated one of my favorite outfits almost to a T (the shirt is a different color, multiply my A&A bangles by about 5 and add 1) for an easy and appropriate option – and so you can look just like me:

1. Patterson J. Kincaid Harlow Long Sleeve Blouse, $98, 2. Free People Lace Trim Bandeau, $28, 3. 7 For All Mankind Gwenevere Super Skinny in Double Knit, $169, 4. Alex and Ani Love Charm Bracelet Set, $78.50, 5. Jimmy Choo Madame Metallic Leather Sandals, $725

This outfit is also great for a “day to night” transition.  Layer a scarf and either a waterfall cardigan or boyfriend blazer for day and then remove scarf and outerwear to party all night.  Don’t forget to revisit my sheer “Do’s and Don’ts.”

Peek-a-boo!

Why Did You Eat That: The Trouble with Truffle

By |April 11th, 2011|Recipes, Why Did You Eat That?|

I’ve mentioned my love of Cecconi’s and their goat cheese & black truffle ‘pregiato’ pizza and sadly, while I’ve moved to suburbia where I don’t have to choose between Five Guys and In N’ Out (we’ve got ’em both), I also don’t have the liberty of strolling into Cecconi’s and ordering up the $48 dollar pizza of my dreams.  Being the resourceful girl that I am, I was able to do some reconnaissance work and find a (more than) suitable fill in.

Clearly, I couldn’t find the exact Cecconi’s recipe.  It’s not really up for sale and even if it were, it’d probably cost me a pretty penny.  I found a really great similar recipe from Guilty Kitchen and I must say, it very well may be the best dang pizza you’ve never made… yet.  It is a bit labor intensive, but it’s worth all the blood, sweat, and tears once you taste this heavenly pie.

The Best Dang Pizza You’ve Never Made… Yet.

For the crust :
(makes one large rectangle crust)

1/4 cup warm water
2 tsp active dry yeast
1 tsp sugar
2/3 cup water,  room temperature
1 Tbsp olive oil
2 cups whole grain whole wheat flour
3/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 Tbsp fresh rosemary, finely chopped
baking spray, butter or other fat (for greasing your bowl)

1. Place 1/2 a cup of water in a small bowl or glass measuring cup. Sprinkle in yeast and add tsp. of sugar, stir and let rest 5-10 minutes.
2. Add room temperature water and olive oil to yeast mixture, stir.
3. Place flour and salt in bowl of electric mixer, fitted with paddle attachment. Mix on low for a few seconds.
4. Slowly pour yeast mixture into flour, mixing on low speed. Mix until dough begind to form and sides of bowl are clean. Rest for 5 minutes.
5. Meanwhile, change out the paddle attachment, for the dough hook. Mix for another 5-10 minutes, or until dough becomes smooth and elastic.
6. Oil a medium sized bowl, plop dough ball in, cover in plastic wrap and let rise for 1 1/2 to 2 hours in a warm place.
7. Punch down, roll out into a rectangle and fold edges in on themselves to make a small crust.

For the toppings:

1 large sweet onion (Vidalia, Walla Walla, etc)
1 tsp olive oil
1 12 oz bottle of amber (or darker) beer (minus three or four swigs for the chef!)
salt & fresh cracked pepper
2 Tbsp brown sugar
2 cups brown mushrooms, sliced
2 cloves garlic
1 tsp olive oil salt and fresh cracked pepper
2 fresh black mission figs, diced
2 oz. fresh goat’s cheese (chèvre)
sprinkling of black or white truffle oil

1. Peel onion, cut in half from top to bottom, slice into thin half moon slices.
2. In large, heavy bottomed saucepan, add oil, onions, s & p and sugar.
3. When onions have begun to soften, begin adding beer about a 1/4 cup at a time. Allow liquid to cook out completely before adding more. Essentially, you are deglazing the pan over and over again.
4. When all the beer is gone and pan has been deglazed a final time, set onions aside.
5. Slice mushrooms and grate, mince or crush up your garlic cloves. I’m not picky…
6. Add mushrooms and garlic, plus 1 tsp olive oil into saucepan (you could use the onion pan if you don’t want to clean more than one, I know that’s what I would do).
7. Sautée until mushrooms are fully cooked, set aside.

Time to get grilling!

1. Heat your grill to almost high. Brush olive oil onto the top of your crust (the side your toppings will eventually rest on). Toss onto oiled grill for 3-5 minutes.
2. Oil the bottom as the crust is grilling. When ready, flip over and grill the other side for another 3-5 minutes. Be gentle when flipping!
3. When done, remove to large baking tray.
4. Take your goat’s cheese and rub it all over the crust, kind of like a sauce. The heat from grilling will melt the cheese a bit and make it easier to spread.
5. Sprinkle on your onions, mushrooms and figs and more goat’s cheese if you want.
6. Here is where you can do two things to finish your pie. 1) Return to grill on medium heat and bake until cheese is melted and crust is golden and crispy OR 2) Set in 450-500°F oven and bake for about 10 minutes. Either way is fine.
7. When your pizza is ready, drizzle truffle oil over (not too much), cut into 8 pieces and serve. Delicious!

You can try it without the figs if you’d like, but I think they add another layer of flavor.  The pizza is fantastic either way.  As usual, you’re welcome.

Weekend Playlist: Easy, Breezy, Beautiful

By |April 9th, 2011|Weekend Playlist|

The past few weekends (not to mention weeks) have been insanely hectic.  So, this weekend, I’m beyond thrilled to be taking it easy and doing a whole lot of nothing.  The weather is getting nicer (not nice, but nicer) and we have a beautiful back/side/front/court yard to gaze at.  Basically, we are surrounded by green and beautiful smelling flowers.  It’s like living in my own childhood dream of The Secret Garden (more on that later).  Anyway, what’s better than opening up the doors and letting a little fresh air in and just relaxing with friends and good music?  Okay, maybe a glass of sangria.

  1. Broken Bells– October
  2. Modest Mouse– Ocean Breathes Salty
  3. Santigold– Shove It
  4. Jason Collett– Lake Superior
  5. Foster the People– Pumped Up Kicks
